Neg Repping Just because shouldent Be allowed!

One time I got -40 rep for agreeing with the 'wrong' person in an argument. All I did was press thanks button, and the guy went nuts and went looking for my years-old posts to neg-rep.
Some really deranged people among us.
The problem here is that people just don't get what this number means. If you think about it, people are getting +rep for being funny, being cute, being helpful, posting cat pictures, posting useful IM-related downloads, giving away stuff, or, sometimes, for no reason at all. Same for -rep, you can get it for being an ass, being on wrong side of an argument, sharing something someone doesn't want to be shared, or, just for the heck of it.
Surely you can't have the same number for all of these, even worse if you call it "Reputation". That's bound to cause some confusion on a variety of levels.
If you'd try to analyze different ways of amassing tons of rep points, and see if it could be broken down into different categories, you'd probably end up with something like this:
1. Be active, helpful and respectful. Have your area of expertise, and help other people with information based on your knowledge and experience. Members like: wasted, netmoney1, meathead1234, and many others.
2. Be a clown. Just like in real life, entertainers are always handsomely paid for doing what they do best, but the issue here is how they get compensated for their 'brilliance'.
3. Post IM products in the Downloads section.
4. Be a post-whore and pretender. If you write 10 posts a day, and only 1 of them gets +rep'd, in a year, you'll have 3500 posts and guaranteed 1000+ rep points.
Now, I have nothing against people who seemingly only post in Lounge or in Downloads section, it's good to have them here, but... when they accumulate the same number of +rep and +thanks, through completely different means, with or without merit, then what do these numbers really mean?
An active member will know ? regardless of the stats ? that _______ is a troll and impostor, he will know that members [...] got their stats for giveaways and reuploading stuff from other forums, but what about the rest?
An average member will probably judge others ? how valuable they are, how much they know, and how much they earn, in most cases ? based on: 1. their color/status (admins and mods, exec vips, other vips, regular members, newbies), 2. number of rep points (and ratio with posts), 3. number of Thanks points, 4...
I have no idea why I'm writing this crap, but what I'm trying to illustrate is -- due to way it is influenced, the Rep number has became meaningless here, and on a forum with half million members, where 90+% people won't be able to differentiate even the regular posters, relying on stats (what majority will always do) might be dangerous, as seen in Kimi's case recently (tons of chargebacks, and people admitting they wouldn't buy if it wasn't for his 'status').
I guess this answers the "why does it (rep) matter" question someone posted above. It shouldn't matter, but it does and you'll be judged based on numbers that can be inflated in most useless ways. In general, if you have positive rep, and it isn't 'too low ' for your post count (eg. 300 posts/15 rep might prompt some questions), you have nothing to worry about. If you are a new member, and you break some unwritten rule, or side with a wrong person, or post something someone doesn't like, and as a result, get negative rep, you'll be handicapped as a result of that.
If you have -10 rep, you're not welcome in JV section, BST (on the service side), HAF, some giveaways, your words lose most of their weight, and you might even be teased about it (or get more -rep, the bandwagon effect).
Anyway, don't worry about rep, just participate in the forum and it will eventually fix itself. You can always post some cat pictures or troll people who ask how to make money if you want a faster fix.

I give rep and I take it away - just as I've been repped and had it taken from me too.
I give a hell of a lot more than I take away, but if anyone is racist/sexist/aggressive or just incredibly stupid then I'll hit that neg rep button - it's what it's there for.
By far the easiest way to get neg repped by me though is to out someone elses site - I hate that shit.

Like botwiz said most big players here have a rep of 10 and a post count of arround 10-100 on a 4+ years account
