how to speed up my website load time?

Open my zen-cart based website, god! so slow, took me 5mins plus to open the home page! What a disaster to my clients! I don't want to change host, files are not going to be deleted! suggestions for speeding up!!!

It could be your host but you said you didn't want to change hosts. I would recommend compressing your images and reuploading them after having them downsized. Also, use cloud hosted javascript and jquery files. That should help you a lot!

http://webpagetest.org - Check which files are loading. Make sure that you don't have any 404's in the initial page load. Minify the JS, Minify the CSS. Make sure the product images are not too large and being resized. Load the javascript dynamically from the footer. Remove large background images. Use a single image ( look up sprite ) for any images that are repeated through the website so those images only have to be loaded once. Consider using a regional content strategy if you still need to shave more time through a content delivery network.

I had the same problem with my site and I used this http://gtmetrix.com/

it pointed out everything that was running to slow and how I can fix it and I did it and bam soon as I hit enter my site it loads where as before took anywhere from 5-10 seconds to load

I used this many times and everytime it given me lots of advise to speedup my website.

Most of the time its hosting that caused websites to slow down. Although if that's not an option for you to change,you can try a lighter theme and an effective caching plugin.

Insteed of gtmetrix I am use Google speed test. This tool give you good advice directly from Google

For image optimization you can use smushitDOTcom or (i am personaly use) quittance(DOT)ru/variator(DOT)php. This tool can reduce image size more then half and you can choose a quality. Its on russian but just couple of bottoms, its easy to use.

Else you can use HyperCash plagin for WP, compresson etc. Just use Google Speed test advice as checklist
