This I can say from having read over some of their information: When you edit a document that "requires attention" your edit will sit in a pot for mods / mega-editors to look over and either delete or leave.

This I can say from experience: Try to keep your edits / additions down in the external links section and make them relevant to the page in question as opposed to contextual links in the body - the latter get binned quicker it seems. Make them look as legit as possible.

Well I know there are different levels of moderator accounts. There are super moderators and things like that, but I think that's very hard to get to. I think there are two things to look out for. First is you have to 'hide' the link so it's not obviously a backlink for SEO purposes. Second of all, anybody can look at anybody else's contributions. So if an editor looks at your user contribution page and sees that you added a link to the same site from five different articles, obviously that's going to look sketchy.

On another note, anybody working on reputation management (I am at the moment), this is a great thing to do. If somebody bad-mouthed your company and you need to push them down in rankings, build your company a wikipedia page. Do it right and it will stick. This isn't necessarily very easy though...

How to Make it Stick

• There are a few techniques you can use to make the reference stick. First of all, if the sentence is "Core stability is good for the heart," then on your webpage make sure there's a line somewhere that says that. Make something up and say "Dr. Jacobs in his experiments in 1994 at the University of Stanford, proved that core stability increases heart health in a number of key measurements" or something like that. That way, the reference is valid (or at least looks valid).
• Look for places that say "Citation Needed." On the page I provided you can see like ten of them. Put your reference in there and in the "edit notes" section, say something like "Inserted a reference to fill in a 'citation needed' issue." Wiki editors LOVE THIS because you are fixing things they have flagged as issues.

• Insert two references for the same sentence. First, include a really intense good edu or gov reference (for example: and then add your reference right after it, reducing suspicion.

Do these things and you'll be popping up Wikipedia links link it's nobody's business.

Another good way to get reference citations is to pop along to your local university library. If you think like an academic writing a journal and cite everything in multiple ways you'll definitely make the link stick even more!

You'd be surprised how much blatant advertising slides on Wikipedia, with just the slightest bit of tact and subtlety.
I see sentences on articles namechecking books and products, and upon a revision history search, find out that similar edits have been made to several articles by the very same user.
As long as you get past the initial user watch by making some useful edits, you can get away with a lot.

Saw this thread and went ahead. I googled "citation needed" and found a very interesting article in the online marketing niche. Just edited the original Wikipedia post and added the reference.

I have to say... I worked my ass off writing the article to "tailor" it to what a Wikipedia admin could expect. It uses the same words for the definition used in the Wikipedia text and it looks natural. Also, I added another reference (from a non-competitor), just in case...

Let's see how long it stays up!

Hey everyone,
I just saw this thread was still going so I wanted to add a little update. If you read my post it says you should add your reference as a bare URL. It's actually safer to add your reference WITH keywords (and obviously better for you). Here's the syntax:

<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.PUT-YOUR-URL-HERE.com/FILE-NAME.html |title=YOUR KEYWORD PHRASE |date= |accessdate=2013-07-16}}</ref>

Important notes:

• Be reasonable with your keywords. If you put "Buy Viagra Online" as your keyword, your link is going to get removed very quickly. If you make the title "Effects of Viagra on the Elderly" well, maybe it's not the exact KW you wanted but at least you passed on something relevant. Think inconspicuous.
• accessdate is the date the material was accessed. I like to put a date from a couple months ago so it doesn't look like it was added today.
• There are a bunch of other parameters you can add too like publisher and author. You can Google those
• Make sure to preview page before you save otherwise you can mess things up and it will save wrong and definitely get deleted.
• The | sign, whatever that's called, is how you separate between parameters like url and title, so you can't include it in anything else. For example, you can't have your title be "My Awesome Title | MySite.com". You could do "My Awesome Title - MySite.com" instead...

Oh and for the person that said that this doesn't work anymore - you're wrong.

Good method, What also works is just editing existing references..... lol i once just edited a coup,e of refrences and got links on wikipedia to stick for ages........ I also think timing is key........ because moderators have to sleep eventually..... or then again they are really sad...so maybe not.. (Lol who would honestly volunteer to be a mod on wikipedia(on another side note the owners of wikipeida get huge donations from google(or some really big internet giant i couldnt remember if it was google or some other company))
