Let's Talk About Getting Backlinks

With Google's Social Media slap going around, it's important to get backlinks from other sources besides social media (lenses & bookmarks). Some of these other sources include article submissions, press releases, video submissions, commenting on forums/blogs, and software submissions (PAD).

Am I missing any other backlink methods here? Which method or methods are the best for getting backlinks and ranking high in Google (especially with regard to time commitment)? What are the some of the ways to automate the laborious process?

Let's take the time to discuss these questions and more in this thread.

I think Blog commenting and forum posting are very important for SEO. They are easy to do and get quick results.

I would add web directories and blog directories (if applicable) to your list. It's pretty easy to find folks providing submission services (I would start at WF).

Yahoo Answers and Answerbag never hurts too, though they are nofollow, they bring in traffic, and really a nofollow from a text answer does not compare with a nofollow link from a bookmark page noone visited.

Widgets, simply because you put your backlinks and promote on widget platforms like widgetbox,clearspring , yourminis, igoogle, social spaces etc... Let others do the work for you

What do you guys think about Video submissions and PAD (software) submissions? I heard PADs get tons of backlinks. How would you go about doing this?

There are tons of ways to get backlinks, but these are a few of my favorites that always work:

1. Articles
2. Video
3. Social Bookmarking
4. Comment
5. Web 2.0 properties(squidoo, hubpages, blogger, etc)
6. Images
7. PAD
8. Yahoo answers, answerbag etc

Variation is important guys. Don't ever follow a set routine. Get a variety of backlinks and you'll see much better results.

9. PR Storm. That program rocks with some niches. I am still testing to see how often I have to-re-uo them. (This is just one of those "temporary" link.
10. Blog directories works great with some niches.

I think 4.comment above must be blog and forum posting. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am also testing Neurolinker. Jury is still out for me.
Haven't tested LinkVana or AMA ... too much good and bad reported. I guess depends on niche.

yeah variety is the key, but unless you outsource many of the boring jobs, you'll most likely find you wont follow through and complete them all - well I wouldn't anyway.

Yeah, outsourcing is definitely the way to go, or software to automate the process.

For those that don't have a choice of either, hang in there. And make a plan. Setup a 1 week at a time plan and stick with it. If you do this, you'll see results.

Than after you make some money, re-invest into software or outsourcing. This is exactly how I did it. And looking back now, this was a good experience. It really teaches a lot about marketing and how to do it right.

I'm glad I had this experience.

Example plan:

Day 1 - Product/Keyword research
Day 2 - Account Creation
Day 3 - Content Creation
Day 4-7 - Backlink generation (5-10 links per day per property)

This is by no means a "set in stone" plan. It is just for an example. Every market and every promotion is different.

Good stuff guys! Always think variety when building links and the other thing JUST DO IT! Link building is boring as hell but it is the glue that holds all of this together so it must be done regularly and consistently.

Automate first and then outsource when you get enough money, find the right team at the right price and when you know how to track everything so that your not just shooting in the dark.

PAD stands for Portable Application Description, it was created by a developer and purchased by the Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP) a number of years ago. The ASP maintains the specification and provides it to developers free of charge. The PAD file for an application maintains relevant information related to the application, in the PAD format. Basically, PAD uses XML to store information related to a software application.

Software download websites extract information from the PAD file, like the software name, file size and download link. The software download site uses the information contained in the PAD file to create a listing for the software in its archive.

Many software download sites also poll the PAD files of software listed on their websites. If the PAD file has changed they automatically update the software listing with the new information. Software sites often will request the software's pad file during the software submission process. The download websites can then extract the information about the application from the PAD file.
