i'm suprised a lot of you guys have never dealt with this. I have worked in house for many large firms in different verticals and have seen this a lot. This is pretty normal results IF it's done right. While it is always recommended to have unique relevant content; duplicate content across websites DOES work. It's duplicate content inside the same website what is frowned upon.

If you want an example, look at one of the largest dental design companies in america. They provide the same content across each one of their websites. Unless the doctor changes it himself. They currently manage 6,000+ clients that all have the same content.

While I won't give out exact URL's - these dental websites are ranking quite well in a lot of cities with this content.

All I did was take a small sentence snippet from one of their websites and look how much duplicate content is out there. Even other dentists that are not clients of the web design company are stealing the content.

WARNING: I would advise anyone doing this with link building and/or adsense websites. You will get caught and penalized and/or banned..

Does he have actual literate stores in these locations? If so it's perfectly normal - there are various chain stores throughout the country that have different websites for each location, yet all point back to the chain's main website. Most of the time they have very similar content or nearly the same content, as you mentioned. Is this the case or am I mistaken?

Because it's a safe check; If Google happens to find your network or that you have 5,000 websites with the same content all interlinking you will be dropped and dropped hard (also if your using adsense and they find you stealing content)

Duplicate content on this scale only works for local businesses in small markets and if it's done correctly.

with duplicate content you can outrank the original source.just make a test

you can add duplicate content on adsense site but add some value to it(some pictures ,some videos or more details).also if you want to use duplicate content be sure to make it look viral posting on facebook and twitter.in this way google will think that you are the original source.

I've read similar things in other places and have heard essentially the same thing - with the exception of the theory that the local algorithm is different enough from the general search algorithm that this works with local but not with general. But GiorgioB has experience to the contrary so I guess this isn't totally unreasonable.
I guess you guys should just try and see if it works for you!

Here's a practical example.

Search for intel corporation.

Get this in the top 10: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel

Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel

Grab a random sentence from that page that makes sense and may seem like a search term.

Search for a part of it.

I found a page 1 result for vision of andy grove which is a copy of wikipedia...there are probably more....

That's a shitty keyword but it shows how you can rank for wikipedia content, exact duplicate content.

Anyway, I just gave an example above. Using the same idea you can find TONS of duplicate content ranking all over the place.

I wouldn't say you were necessarily throwing your money away, just think of it as taking less risk..

all i can say is - this needs a test on a few keywords.

Just to add into the whole duplicate content thing - When a company releases a press release (depending on the size) they could get thousands - tens of thousands of links from the same exact content. These sites not only don't get penalized but generally see pretty fair ranking increases. Press release marketing is one of the most effective methods i use.
