1. Do Guestposts play a role in the last G update? This heavily (ab)used tactic was definately overused and specifically called out by Matt Cutts
2. Does the number of disavowed links play a role?
3. Did Google really get better at identfying and penalizing Link Networks automatically?
4. Is the war on web-spam really successful or are spammy linking practices still present in the SERPs ? and where?

So, do guest posts work?
No, if you're gonna spam the fuck out of the crappy sites with your guest posts
Yes, if you're gonna use quality sites

The only way Google found to fight the war on spam is to require lots of money to get #1. They are making it more and more expensive to do any SEO, they figure that way the market will do its own quality control.

So major brands with $$$ for SEO are tops. Google has become a luxury listing for Ebay, Amazon, Wikipedia and Youtube(obvious conflict of interest there with Youtube, but the FTC don't care).

4- Google has improved its system quite significantly to fight with spam, but still there are people who are ranking with spam. You just have to be smart, whatever you do.

If you own a ranking system and you systematically rank your own offerings above others, that's a conflict of interests.

According to me, SEO is same as past years, only focus on niche relevant and links from quality sites. Never develop your own ways of link building like secret network, guest posts etc.

Mind it, link from quality niche sites are much enough to rank a website of low and medium competition through proper strategy.

I see SEO dying. I haven't actively participated or done SEO until recently. However I do remember how many more successful stories I would hear in this Forum 2 years back. SEO would be as good as networking, getting the word out for good quality content and genuine visits.

Hello, This is my firs post and I'm a complete Newbie, but I find this thread very interesting. In my opinion Google is trying to collapse "small time" Internet Marketing (using Clickbank, JVzoo, etc.) and leave more space for "Internet Marketing" to guys like Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple and so on - software and hardware giants. That is what I feel. Do you think that Google staff doesn't read BHW? and reading all the spam methods posted, and do you think they don take these into "consideration"? I'm sorry that back in the days (like 2005 I was jus a kid and didn't know anything about IM - these days you could setup and autoblog and rank for competitive keywords overnight and make 50 tons of money just doing that. Now, whatever you do, nothing works, no matter how hard you try and you end up being scammed, teached obsolete (old non working) methods and after all your work instead of feeling like you are earning on autopilot you feel like failing on autopilot.

It's only abused if the posts are shit. Quality content on quality sites are just fine
Does the number of disavowed links play a role?
I don't think so. I believe googles updates affect certain niches, and not others. The niches that are targeted for these updates are typically the most competitive and the most risque. (payday loans, for example) I think a normal person with quality content that is 100% white hate will have to disavow 0 links. I mean, do you think ebay.com is sitting around disavowing links? Do you think amazon is? Those might be bad examples because of their size... but I'm sure you see what I mean.

I'm sure they've built a larger database of link farms and link networks. It would be pretty simple to do this with simple networking. As in, networking of the links. It's the same idea they use nowadays to take down terrorists and gang members. Of course, this is 100% theory and I have no idea. I'm just assuming what I would do if I worked in this department.

Of course it's not successful. I'm sure google spends some money on web spam, but why is this their job? Is google the spam police? Google is a for profit company. Everything they do can come back to profit motive. I'm sure they've done some work here for PR and to satisfy some clients.... but really, no, I think most of what they do is blown out of proportion.

Just a side note - Wasn't there a lawsuit in Europe somewhere in regards companies PAYING google to be number one in organic searches for keywords? I'm sure this happens... It's stupid to think it doesn't.


I have noticed over the years..... in regards to SEO..... content is king. That has never changed, and I don't think it ever will.

SEO changes every year and it in 2013 there are various new changes in it. You should write blogs with compelling content and use sharing buttons on blogs such as Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and more. Grow your social networks and Facebook Graph search is also used these days.
