Quite often I try and think what the next big thing will be on the Internet.

its quite hard to think really, because google literally domineer the entire Internet.

And to be honest, they do a pretty good job of it - hence why everyone uses google, and why anyone here trying to rank sites is trying to rank in google.

but I was thinking today, as we all know, google are starting to display a lot of their own information for certain queries - calculations, conversions, currencies, stock market prices and flight information.

it made me think to myself how google domineer a information provision on a global scale, and that their long term goal is probably to be the single point of information for the world - which they are not far from already.

this made me think how valuable information is, and the fact that everyone who publishes on the Internet is actually giving away all of their (very valuable) information to google.

right now this is considered a good thing, and everyone is desperate to give google all of their information.

but I'm wondering if one day this will turn into a negative, and people will rebel from this?

disclaimer: I have no real point here! I'm just thinking out loud:-)

It is highly likely imho that G will be toppled by then with a better solution provider...

After all G are fat cats now, and history indicates laziness is about to set in and/or has set in already...

Then along comes a new innovative big fish to swallow G up...

Google will either be spot on with the search results, or not even exist if something drastic happens. In the computer age, a lot can happen in 5 years.

I think Amazon has the potential to beat Google someday. Definitely not Facebook though.

It will be the same 1 search form page, but with 5x times more money than today :)

In 5 years Google will be as good as Altavista

Google is here to stay for a long time. I can guarantee you that they will move into hardware (They bought Motorola) and then its not just a matter of other companies being able to come and hit Google, because at that point it won't be possible. Google being in hardware (Mobiles/tablets) can mean targeted ads with more information on every person (All their accounts are connected, search history apps downloaded etc Your life will literally be in a database.. ). There is no way in the fucking world Google can get screwed over in the near future (Unless they really fuck up).

What I would suppose, if anything, can bring google down is the privacy concern. I am kind of waiting for the next big thing on privacy to happen. Honestly I think of it a soon to be privacy revolution, either for privacy or against it.

That is sort of why I posted this. Just trying to think outside the box - what comes next?

but it's quite hard, I know we all moan about the results that google gives, but they do have it tied up pretty well.

i use google in my job every day, and in fact I use it if I'm ordering a take away, buying anything, researching something, looking for people. I literally use it to find anything and everything. And you can't deny that its better than all the other engines by far.

so if a company wanted to overtake google, what would they really do differently? - or is there going to be a big jilt in this industry that we can't quite see yet?
or is google going to get even more domineering in years to come?

Google has been exponentially growing for 15+ years, they pretty much have the rundown of the entire grid on planet earth. Think about the power that they currently possess.

In my opinion I think we are headed for a complete digital age, everything will be handled by your smartphone/tablet and a pair of Google glasses. Passport, drivers liscence, SSN, banking, and pretty much every other necessity that is part of the average sheep's life will be on your "Google Powered" devices & software.

If anyone has watched the show Person of Interest, you see that the idea is a reality and Google is that "machine" that has been evolving for over the past decade.

Yea, that sounds about right.

True, privacy is the biggest potential issue.
