Noob SEO Question - Youtube backlinks?

Hi guys,

Sorry for the extremely nooby question. I manage many Youtube channels and some of them are very large >100k subscribers. I have checked the PR of these and they are mainly PR5 and PR6. They have hundreds of videos and most of these are also PR 4/5/6.

If I was to put a link to my site on the channel page and/or all of the video descriptions, will this increase my ranking in the SERP? Also do you have any tips on how I should do this, do I link to my site or certain articles on it?

Yes having inbound links to the video works in the same way that links to a website work. If you build more of these to your videos or the channel pages from authoritative sites, that will help. Seems like if you have over 100k subscribers that the channel is already doing pretty well.

All the links will be nofoll0w which doesn't pass any link juice, however it can't hurt your backlin profile as they are aauthority links.

However, what would be more useful would be to place them there to funnel traffic to your website. In that case, it could definitely send you plenty of visitors if your videos are getting lots of views.

Google has said before that some no-follow links will pass link juice, however the factors determining this are unknown. If the links you intend to place on the video description and channel are of interest to your audience, then why not give it a try. A few links aren't going to make a big difference in SERPs anyways.

If your website is relevant to the content of the videos you'll be linking from you might find that a little bit of link juice might get passed on. It's common belief that rel=n0follow links don't pass anything on but honestly, no one knows for certain.

The larger advantage would be putting a link to your site right in front of the eyes of relevant traffic/visitors who are already engaged with similar content and are building trust with every viewed minute that passes.

You'll find that what placing your links in these channels may lack in SERP assistance will definitely be offset by the influx of targeted traffic that'll start to make their way to your site.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I've just done some research on nofollow and d0follow (this was new to me) and it seems like people have mixed opinions on whether it helps in the SERPs. I think the link on the actual channel page (by the banner) is actually a d0follow link and I have a PR6 channel so hopefully that will help a bit - my competition is very low and most of the comptetitors don't do a lot of SEO. I'll go ahead and test it out and come back here with my results

As others have said, they are technically no-follow links. But, Google will still consider them as part of your link profile. A healthy, natural-looking link profile will have some combination of follow and no follow links.

So, it's not the main method to boost your SERPs, but it can contribute to having a well-rounded link profile.

I'd definitely be interested in seeing what the impact would be. On one hand yeah it's a nofollow link, but on the other hand it's an authoritative channel on a social platform owned by Google, so they may count a whole lot. If the former is true, I'd be willing to bet anything that in the near future they'll be heavily weighted.

of course high pr websites linking to your video will help tremendously. remember to do it slowly, Google can smell something fishy if suddenly there is a surge of high pr websites linking to you.
