Good AntiVirus

So I dug up my 6 year old laptop (LOL, its a beauty)
I cleaned it up, re-installed everything in it, put up Windows XP with Google Chrome

... What would you guys suggest for Antiviruses?
And if anyone has any download links, that would be great!

(Its just.. I want to download some stuff from here, but.. I want to have an antiviruses running for protection.. you know what I mean)

antivir catches all kind of shit. alot of people dont like it because it flags tons of false positives.

thats what i use. just add anything im sure is a false positive to safe list and go on.

Eset Nod32 or Eset Smart Security are the best imo, they are light, with very few false positives, fast virus definitions updates.

Whatever you go with, turn off automatic daily scanning, automatic scanning is horrible on laptops (especially 6 year old ones) because every time you turn on the laptop it starts running (because it missed the overnight scan) and ruins your whole session. IMO full daily scans are worthless because the real time protection will catch anything that tries to run or if you go into a folder with an infected file it pops up a warning.

Of course unless you register mbytes you have to run it manually but it is only $24.50 to register and it's worth it.

I have always been dubious about using cracked security software, seems like an oxymoron.

I've been using avira's antivir for quite a while and im pretty impressed with it overall, however, a few days ago i had gotten some type of autorun virus that managed to skim by antivir and resulted in me having to format my hard drives and reinstalling windows. My definitions were up to date and everything but there is no such thing as an AV tool that will catch everything. I would recommend antivir though, and dont listen to all those nubs on the torrent sites that say keygens and cracks are supposed to be detected as a virus, they are full of it.

Best solution install virtualbox or vmware and install another copy of your os in the virtualization software.
That way you can always restore it to a clean install , doesn't matter if the software you are going to use comes with hidden spyware in it.

norton already known as best antivirus in term of protection and detectionn but lots of us try to avoid norton because they use lots of memory / ram resources. but now they overcome that problem and try to undertake again the crown of the best antivirus again. yes, i'm using it now. low memory resources (around 7mb) compared to eset and avg.

This is exactly what I do, Microsoft Virtual PC for Windows installs and VMWare for Linux installs. I wanted to love virtualbox but it just never seemed as good as the other two (to me, don't want to start a VM flame war) I make a separate OS install for every important program I have just about anymore (things like accounting software and such) Makes backups easy too since you only have to backup a couple files and you get the whole install, data and all. I usually throw a copy on this:

That way if the worst case scenario ever happens I can just download my virtual machines from there and keep on trucking on a new PC.

I would rather have my computer infected with viruses than infected with norton LOL I uninstall norton garbage on 2 to 3 PC's a day and the people think I have worked some kind of voodoo to speed their computer up. But hey, if it's working for you, I am all for it

One more thing that I will point out that is awesome is:

It is free for personal use and it makes an image of your hard drive while windows is running using volume shadow copy. You can schedule it to do it however often you want. I have mine set to once a week going to an external hard drive. Another awesome thing it does, if you double click on an image file that it makes, it will let you mount it as another hard drive and you can browse through your backup as if it were a physical disk. Great for recovering a file you deleted by accident. It also creates a boot cd so if you ever fry your install you can do an image restore. Kind of like norton ghost but better in every respect IMO.

most AVs are like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted they're always playing catch up. As soon as there's an update the malware creators are working on a way round it. Some of them are getting better with their anti heuristics but that comes at a price of performance and bogs down your pc.
I don't use AV's I run sandboxie, X-Netstat pro and the all seeing eye from fortego. Sandboxie allows me to reverse any changes that occure during a session however I rarely have to do that because all seeing eye notifies me of the slightest change in my set up it even tells you you'r opening a wndow and x-netstat gives me the ip's of all the pc's and networks i'm connected to with a trace function and whois so if i see a unfamiliar connection that gets further attention.

I love avast! Anti-virus. Free, and easy to use. It has always caught any viruses/trojans in the past that I have come across. I would never pay for anti-virus software as long I can continue to use this for free.
