So I am running a Health/Wellness blog for few weeks now. Every 2-3 hours when I check to see comments, their they are: Shitty xanax, ambien, viagra spun comments. And their are SO SO many, its just frustrating to even put them to spam/trash one by one.

Is there any way to protect blog against spam comments? How do you manage it?
I am thinking of putting a captcha in it but I am not sure it can be done since the comments section is inbuilt in theme.

What CMS are you using?

If you are using wordpress, get yourself "Akismet WordPress Plugin".

Yep. I am using Wordpress.
Also I just realized my akismet was deactivated for some reason. :pat:
Thanks for reminding.

I'l install this plugin too just to be safe.
BTW I found a nice way to keep some of the spam comments.
EDIT them and turn them in to real genuine comments:cool:

Antispam Bee is a real free option without requiring any API key.

But yea, that is one creative way to use comments, although if you have hundreds of them, you may want to block them. Auto delete every 1 month or so will minimize maintenance time.

Install some security software for htaccess protection, and login protection as well. Just to ensure you will be safe against downtime from malicious attacks.

I also hate it when my comment box is spammed by viagra advertising dudes. The best way is to install antispam plugins.

There are wodpress antispam plugins that you would like to use on your website. It will help you a lot

what about the genuine comments does it block them 2 or only spam comments?

Yeah, Real comments have never been marked as spam. This plugin is very reliable and spam comments are easily intercepted.

I am simply using akismet right now. And it does not block genuine comments. Completely blocks useless crap stuff. This morning I saw 60 spam comments all blocked by akismet.

But every now and then my website seems down for couple of minutes. I am assuming these are attacks on my website? Or could also be a godaddy problem. The message always say something about execution time in blah blah.php file. Today I will install the anti spam plugin and see if it reduces the number of downtimes.

Just some advice but you should read about eval infection sitting in saved spam comments.

Oh god. One time, I woke up to thousands of spam comments on my blog. I had to go through them slowly as I also have legitimate comments.
