Congrats on the sale! I don't think it should be considered a trick.. You were completely honest -- I have a site that I am looking to sale and I also sent this to your competitors (who may be interested, if you are not). Might have been a slight play on fear and greed, but ehhh.. that's the world we live in. I will say that it was awesome that you decided to be proactive and find people to contact and actually do so! Would have been easy to let it expire and just say, "Ehhh, I wasn't doing anything with it and I don't really need it.. Let it expire.."

Question: Was the site still ranking and pulling in traffic? (I know you said you hadn't work at it for some time)

Don't use PayPal next time when you sell a website.Just don't,chance for charge-back is to high and chance for the buyer to get the money back is to high too.It's a digital thing and you are not protected.Use escrow or wire transfer.

Not Really. if the amount is big. you can send them to sign a contract for the domain name and send the files via cd-rom as a shipping proof and transfer the site normally.
the buyer is not protected in digital items as well. the seller should mention digital in the title if there is a dispute but the Contract and the CD will avoid you a lot problems.
