HI I just want to ask how does negative SEO work ? im not planning to do it im just curious on how do they do it and how to prevent it. I heard they use porn backlinks is that true ?

Yes porn backlinks is one way. An other way could be just to make loads of backlinks with 1 single keyword as an anchor. But it's not something anyone should do. Preventing is impossible, however if you keep track of your own backlinks and rank you will be able to fix the problem quickly.

I wouldn't get into it, the last thing you need is more people doing it in your niche and everyone's SEO costs increasing.

Negative SEO is a waste of time. I doubt just spamming gazillions of links will have much effect. Google will likely choose to 100% ignore them for good OR bad.
A proper negative SEO effort would likely need consistency and effort. There have been sites targeted with neg SEO that have benefiited from it and very few stories of sites getting hamemred by it. MC has admitted it is possible - but not as simple as "here are 30,000 shit links" Google's policy seems just to ignore "blasts" these days whether they are from good or bad sites.
And why go to all that trouble when you could spend the time and cash on improving your own sites?
Not to mention feeling like a total $%^& for doing it.

Perfect answer Scritty :) always nice to read your posts.

Actually negative SEO works very well on new sites... if you see a new site ranking high, just blast it with low quality links and it will sink.

Negative SEO is like torture. People have such a vested interest in it not working that they are convinced and seek to convince others that it can't work. When online poker was at its peak in the US I had a friend who did nothing else but run negative moves against his employers competition. It was successful often enough that it meant a seven figure difference for them in the best months. Does it work all the time? Of course not. Does it work often enough to change the playing field for a month or two or three at a clip and mean real money in certain niches ... of course it does!

It's not my game but then again neither is torture. Does anyone really believe that if a burning cigarette were so close to your eye that you could smell your eye lashes burning and here the crackle that you would be of such stern stuff to be making up disinformation to feed them taking the chance they might already know the answer to the question the had just asked. When the eyeball is about to be obliterated by searing heat nine out of ten trained people give it up.

Torture works and that's why it has been used for thousand's of years and negative SEO works and that is why millions are spent every month on implementation.

Most common forms of negative SEO is triggering of penguin, unatural links message or "telling Google" a certain website is about pornographic or pharmacy content.

Just remember only losers use negative seo.

I can assure negative SEO works, amazingly well on new sites and sometimes even on established ones. I ran some tests and can assure it doesn't always work. But if the website being targeted does anything shady seo-wise it is very likely that it will disappear, maybe not in the following days, but on a Penguin refresh.

Having said that I would like to make clear that I don't use it and Google will probably just ignore these links someday, however this is not the case right now.

Generally it is several links sent at high speed to overoptimize a website with one anchor text and then crappy links that get deleted to cause negative link velocity -- an unnatural pattern.

what about negative term seo for your competitors? porn links don't work, people have tried, spamming shit spam links doesn't work, people have tried, if you cant positively promote a site with them, why would it work negatively?

how about "company name review" and boost up a bad review, try to get that bad review to rank when you search "company name", try hard enough and when you google "company name" it will be:

Spot 1:
Title: Company Name Corporate Website
Desc: Blahbla crap we are the best and everyone else sucks buy from us because we are awesome! and our products are made in the USA"

Spot 2:
Title: Company Name HORRIBLE - Don't waste your money!
Desc: This is a personal experience with Company Name and their awful services, slow shipping time, and general disregard for my order and money"

just some food for thought

edit: and ice it with your company ranking third, optimize sporatically (dont over do it) for their main product name or company name, even w2.0 pages linking their type of products that you offer and boost up so when they search "company name" you show up second, "company name review" and your 2.0 or landing page shows second, third, or as one of the main images in the results ???? profit

supremeboxtee: this is very risky, since it may get you to court for defamation. You can explain a gazzilion of spammy link blaming a spambot going haywire, but you cannot blame a targeted content on a spambot....

I really like it when somebody wants to use some gray/black hat techniques on their money site (or even just a T2 site) and they are shaking with fear whether the big G will slap their fingers for that, but when it comes to doing something EXACTLY similar to competitors, the answers are mostly "meh, wont have any effect..." :D

Negative SEO does work, especially on new sites. I've been hit by it on a new website when competitors found the site.

They used two tactics, first they cloned my site content on 10 separate domains, these were exact replicas of my site, aside from the design. Then they bombarded all of the sites they had created with links to get them crawled and indexed.

Next up was a link building campaign to my site from mostly pharma and porn sites, almost all of the links used the primary keyword.

What was most sadistic about the links was that they didn't just spam the site over the course of a couple of days. The slowly built the links up over weeks so there was no chance Google would ignore them as a spam blast.

Not sure if I got deindexed for duplicate content or the spam links but I had to give up and delete the entire site and all the content.

Fuck Negative SEO.

tom: jesus that's brutal.. and then you gave up on that niche or what did you do? Did you try some retalation?

I just walked away from the niche and wrote off my losses.

To this day I have no idea who did it to me! I've got a suspicion, but you can't tank someones site without hard evidence it was them.

It's dirty and there are certain things to look for first.I am not interested in going into it,yes it works,it'll depend on the niche and other factors.Alot of people tend to do it wrong, which is good. It's sad people have to result to it to be honest,it can be countered if you pick up on it quick enough. How you counter it depends on how it is getting done. The disadvantage is most people notice their site drop, the problem is alot of backlink checkers are not quick enough to index the damaging links so by the time they show and you are clear it is neg seo, you're a couple of steps behind.

Anyone doing it wrong will only see a temp neg effect the site will normally return to the same position after a little while.

Each and every time i have tracked some of the big sites in some really big niches ,all i have seen is , negative SEO only benefits the site that is being blasted with backlinks . Plus why destroy something when you still are far from creating something on your own ,make something better , bigger , uber cool that you can show off (i know its hard if you are technically challenged , but then there is always a start to everything ..)
