Need a computer for seo work. So I can get a 19" quad core macbook pro for 800 bucks, as far as speed goes do you guys think this is the best option or is there a pc I could get for around the same price thats more powerful?

You could get an emachines with '95 on it and still do SEO. Automated tools should be running on a server, not your home connection/computer.

Mac always rocks go for 21 inch screen resolution it will be good for anything to do.

If you are going to be buying any good SEO tools your better off getting a Windows based system so you could actually use them.

OP,

Define "SEO Work", this way we will be able to propose more relevant suggestions for a new laptop :)

A lot of the seo work will be done manually, but maybe 1 tool for tier 2 work. I have a macbook pro 2 core, but for video and photo shop editing I dont think it has enough power. So i have a friend that works for apple that can get me 4 core for 800. I'll be able to run windows on it, but was wondering if there was a pc that is comparable or better for around same price.

How many parts do you need?

I7 quad core + HT = $300
Mobo = $100
16 gigs ram = $100
PSU = $100
27" LG IPS Panel (same apple/high end HPs use)= $300
Case = $20->$200
Video card = $50 -> $700

One thing to consider that if you're running windows inside a mac environment, there's still an abstract virtual layer in between which DOES suck some performance out no matter how much hardware the system props tell you that you are using. If you're running software that is hyperthreaded dependant or does a ton of r/w to the hard drive, get a dedicated windows box.

Do your "dodgy" stuff on a VPS. For under $50 a month you can get one that will run 24/7 with a proper 100Mb pipe and decent ram HDD and processor.

Scritty

Most of the SEO Tools aren't supported by MAC e.g: "Scrapebox" and others.

I personally recommend a Windows machine ( Core i7 ) SONY.

You can use parallel desktop to run windows stuff on your mac.. or like everyone said use a window vps

Nah! Like others said, don't invest in a computer if it is only for SEO work. Instead, get a VPS. I use one which costs me $19 a month and runs all tools needed, at blazing speeds! The other regular SEO stuff will work fine on any computer anyway. But if you're adamant about buying a new computer and if you're looking to run tools, make sure they are available with Mac versions (since you're inclined to go with a Mac). Several tools are Windows-Only. Cheers :)

VPS. second that. save the trouble of computer freeze out due to many seo tools running at the same time.

how is a vps different from a dedicated <insert purpose here> pc ?

buy your own pc.

invest in processor & a shitload of ram

for less than 50$ a month you have a VPS for 700$ you have a PS (it's not just virtually private) ...

i've taken the time to create a config for you and it's 670$ without shipping

i am no way affiliated with AMAZON. just sharing links from there because it's the most common website for this type of stuff

so instead of paying 50$/month for a good VPS, especially if you plan on still doing SEO in June 2014, i think you should buy and make your own dedicated server and who knows maybe in a few months you could start sharing your server with others and bank from it

the config i showed doesn't include a graphic card and a monitor because it's a SERVER ! you dont play games on it... you dont buy a VPS to run photoshop on it ;)

i have 2 DC servers in my home and they have gf mx440 on them (way worse then the gpu on the motherboard i posted here) and i have a 4:3 17 inch monitor for them with a signal switcher

dont spend money on shit you don't need just so you can boast with it

"hey i've got a $1.2k MAC on which i can't do crap"
"hey i've got a $700 iphone5 and use it for facebook and instagram yey"

Mine is 64 gigs, dual quad core HT, 1gbps with 2x SSDs+2 storage. I can run a shitload of automated tools without a problem of overloading my connection. Home connections are unreliable and ISPs get pissy if you use more than 100 gigs per month usually.

When you say "SEO Work", you mean Crysis 3 right? You don't fool me ^^
Edit: Just read "Macbook".... Well you can open documents really fast I guess..

that's in the US ... .here in romania on the other hand i've got unlimited bandwidth and 10REALmbps (careful that is megabytes not megabits) for 10$ so ....

anyways nice config on the vps ... how much is it setting you back ? (how much do you pay / month)

10 megabytes = 80 megabits. Not even south korea/japan gets it for $10 USD equivalent. Either its megabits or has some severe limitations.

As for the cost, its $300/month.
