Hey y'all

A couple of months ago, I sent my macbook to be repaired via mail. The technician on the phone told me it shouldn't require any data loss, but after I got it back, and all my data has been wiped. Long story short: I had a life's worth of data on that computer (wedding photos, research, etc.) and yes I am such a retarded dumbass for not backing up the data (I know- I hear you and I deserve to be thrown off the empire state building with my eye catching on a hook)... but is there ANYWAY at all where I can get my old hard disc back (they replaced the one with the data because it was damaged)? even for money or as the title says a hand and a kidney :P? Would it be possible to contact Apple and ask for it?

Why are you asking us? Surely a 5 minute call to Apple would do it?

Finding your damages HDD wouldn't be that hard I guess. The HARDEST thing ever is to get the data back from the damaged HDD. Somebody once told me, only guys with big pockets can afford it :/

I actually know a place that would do it for 700$ which Im willing to pay if it works :(

You really need to contact Apple ASAP. As for the place that charges $700 they will just be running tools that you can find on the internet and do yourself. To recover data from a corrupted disk can run into thousands and there is no guarantee of 100% recovery.

Im on it...I will contact them and see what they can do

I just thought if any one had any experiences with apple in regards to lost data, they could help... but i'll give them a call too and see

actually i had the same problem on a very old ATA hdd a couple years ago (3-4) . luckily i still have the software that helped me recover ~85% of the lost data (hdd was for backup purposes only. only photos videos documents) and it was a 120Gb hdd.

even today when i accidentally delete something i use that little piece of strong software (paid 50$ for it when i had the incident)

get your hands on the drive and pm me so that i can give you my license for the software

If you lost 1 or 2 files then i can bring them back but if you format the whole hard disk data it is really very hard to do so but anyways once contact apple customer care they will take care of you.

actually when you format a drive with non profi tools it just wipes out the MBR. if you dont put any data on it again everything is still there

no win/mac stock tools write 0's on your drive. they just erase the MBR. i've actually experimented with this so i know it for a fact.

if you're on windows format your partition (quick / normal, doesn't matter) and then use any free recovery tool and it will find all your data

Data recovery services do work but they are very costly. You can try the software recovery techniques first but that assumes you had an OS problem. If it's hardware then only data recovery services will do the job but some people swear to the old freeze trick. That's never worked for me. But first confirm with Apple that you do in fact have the original drive otherwise you are spinning your wheels.

And boys and girls computers do sense fear so back up your data on a regular basis!

Will do that after I get my hands on the drive man

Thank you for giving me hope :D hopefully I can get the drive back

I wish you luck! There's nothing as terrifying as losing one's data, so I hope you can get the HDD back swiftly and recovery of at least the most important things.

Update:

I called the motherfuckers... and they said that you did not ask for the hard disc back during the repair (although they told me that they won't wipe my data)... the guy told me that they dispose of hard discs once the repair is done... I still have hope that SOMEHOW I will get that hard drive back!

I would SUE THEM BADLY!

This makes me hate APPLE even more, besides having to create an APPLE ID for stupid people who use iPhone :)
