Do you honestly think that moving forward google is gonna see a link from a crappy article directory, wiki, blog, comment, or any other low quality platform as an accurate reflection of where a site should be, when it's clear as day that these links have been produced with the sole purpose of boosting a websites ranking, or are they gonna see them for what they are.. a source for "manipulating rankings"?

That's great.

Well the principle is fantastic the rhetoric is fiery (and very VERY old) but the truth is exactly as it was in 2002 anf Google Fritz which..as I've said before - Marked "The end of websites beneffiting from spam links"... 11 years ago.

After 11 years of Google repeating the same meesage though Fritz, Dewey, Big Daddy, Cassandra, Alice, Panda, Penguin and all the (many many) other "spam killer" updates and their evangelists following on with posts like this - some people are now believing in this. Despite no hard evidence to prove it.

In the mean time I'll just carry on adjusting a little year on year - and making cash

(PS I don't count pointing to half a dozen QQ ing webmasters as "hard evidence" essp when I can point to the same number who have been demoted and claim to have never made a link or plagirised content in their lives)

True that Scritty, and i haven't been in the SEO game as long as you to see all those older updates, but you can't imagine they're intelligence level of tolerance for spam is at the same level as it was all those years ago.

Despite what some people above might believe, i didn't post that to rub anybody up the wrong way, but it's healthy to have an open discussion about link building and if that includes trying to see it from the eyes of google, well in my opinion that's not a bad thing since it is google's game we're all playing.

It's better than going around with our head in the sand saying no it will never happen in my opinion anyway. Anyway, i've said my piece, back to work...

Link building is all but dead, It depends on the quality of the links and the way you structure the juice to pass on. Tiered link building works perfect for me and many others I think.

Oh I'm with you there (this the subtle changes year on year)
It's what keeps the game interesting
It also keeps the field of really effective SEO's pretty thin as so many rage quit every time one of these updates comes out.

Less competition = more opportunity.

Ironically the most sites that got penalized imo, were the ones with the least amount of links. So thanks google you just proved the point that link building is alive and has evolved.

I see no reason why google would stop considering backlinks. They invented the concept. Unless of course, they (or someone else) come up with a better way to rank websites.
