Should post count be removed?

I don't know what you guys think, but does keeping track of the amount of posts someone has even important? A random forum in a Google search surprised me by only posting the thanks and thanked count. However, when I thought it out, it actually make sense to use another variable besides post count. As part of increasing post value on this forum, I think basing section access and avatars and such off the number of thanked or reputation. It just makes so much logical sense to me. I would love to see someone's view on this.

no offense friend but i think this is a pretty useless question... post counts regardless of importance, is a basic foundation to a forum, you cant have a forum without the post count... and yeah bhw is a forum...

It's an intriguing thought actually. I mean, as long as the join date and the statistics of the member are there, what does post count matter? I honestly see both sides of the situation.

there is one already inplace i think the min is 5 or 15 post counts if im not mistaken

post count dont mean jack if the posts a user make
are rubbish - i dont trust post counts or rep - they mean
nothing, i prefer to watch people over time, u tend to get
a sense of them that rep/posts wont give you.

Post count is important. Its not enough just to read someone's post -- if someone posts something conveying information you need to evaluate it whether its truthful, accurate, insightful, and whether you should heed the advice or not.

Every time I visit the boards and read a post, if I haven't heard of the person before and they're trying to teach others, the first thing I do is look at post count and rep.

Super high post count percentage compared to low reputation percentage = most of what they say is garbage.
Low post count compared to high reputation = they usually only speak when they have something insightful to say.

It's not a foolproof system, there's tear jerking/clickbait posting/rep farming/feelgood stroking high rep members who rarely share anything good relating to IM/SEO, but nonetheless its an important part of the process of taking advice from BHW.

None of this can be derived from a post count. Well it could with like 20% accuracy, but if you used reputation count, you'd looking at at least triple that.

Look at this guy. Here are some of his last posts:
"nice !"
"damn... never heard this one before"
"damn shit just got real"
"i concur"

Take his post count away, and he's nothing but a low thanked count user, which is quite accurate and expected considering the poor quality of his posts.

All these newbies want to fit in by getting high post counts and they feel they won't be able to do so without it.

I remember when a now-banned moderator hard deleted about 1000 of my posts, I still don't have them, but then again, post count really means nothing.

I think that things are fine the way they are, why go messing with something that you know works.

or they should have something in place for when a new user hits a certain amount of post cout a mod will review his posts and see if there quality or not before moving on to a higher rank title. but then again that will be too time consuming

Post count is important just like reps & thanks. It's easy to determine the member if he/she has really contributed or a desperate poster by checking his post count and the reps/thanks he has got against it. And again these are all just magic numbers and doesn't have any real value to it.

I think that a better question would be why don't posts in the Lounge count towards post count? People can just post there all the time and get thanks/rep while keeping their post count low. That's kind of deceiving.

You're joking right? You honestly think mods have the time to review every user? They are volunteers. My solution is one of the easiest possible.

Not sure where you've been but they have value. Specific functions all over the forum are based off the post count specifically. It's been a while so I couldn't tell you all of them but I imagine PMing, and access to certain sections, maybe creating new threads. However, you should realize the big obvious problem is people inflating their post count for some sort of sense of accomplishment. I don't know the last time you've been in the lounge, but post count celebrations are quite common, so the general forum society actually does value the post count.

You're still relatively new so you didn't really get to experience how high-quality the forum posts were. I'm not really that old either though, so I'm hoping maybe someone from before 2009, or long-time mod tymillz, who has been here to see it all could shed some light on what they've noticed changing, if they think post count inflation is a problem, and if this is the proper way to approach it.
