Hello,

One of my sites has gotten a backlink that is listed in google and it is from a very questionable site. Is there anything I can put in my site to not get a link back from that page or is my only option to tell the other webmaster to remove it?

Thank you.

why exactly do you want to get that backlink removed? it wont hurt your rankings.

Google works like a "one way street". Penalties can only travel one way, i.e. linking to a site cant hurt it, but if a site links to a "bad neighborhood" that CAN hurt it. otherwise, we'd all be getting the crappiest links possible to nail our competitors :)

dont worry about the link, it might even help :)

There is no such thing as a bad backlink to your site. If there was, you could get your competitors bad links to ruin them.

There is such thing as bad outward links from your site though. If your site is about debt cures and you link to a lesbian porn site, that link can hurt your rankings because it has nothing to do with your niche.

Unless of course you are trying to get your female visitors to sign up as models so they can earn extra money to pay off their debts.

Unless you are trying to find out "how to remove the backlinks of your competition"? ;)

Yeah the link to you can't hurt you. As the other guys stated if it could, peps would submitt links to their competetors to knock their sites down. As far as I know the only way to remove it is to ask that webmaster to remove the link. But like the other people stated, I would prob. just leave it.

I would like to volunteer to help people out by taking their bad backlinks off their hands. No need to thank me, thats just the kind of guy I am.

What a man always thinking of others! LoL If ya need some help there give me a shout.

Remove? No, but you could create an htaccess rule to deny anyone with that site in their referrer from viewing your site.

I still feel like something isn't right.

Your site can't be penalized from a backlink, but if it collects too many backlinks too quickly, your site can be de-indexed and/or sandboxed. In other words, you could harm your competitors by spamming them with thousands of links, and subsequently have them removed from Google, right?

So is it really true that "there is no such thing as a bad backlink to your site?"

Would this also stop google from listing them as a refferer? For example i type in my website name in google: this is my website. i get my website and that bad link from a stupid site both listed in google. Would this help that at all?

Riposte - the too many backlinks too quickly penalty has never been fully proven as far as I know..after all, there are plenty of sites that get backlinks quickly (viral, news - think election campaigns, etc) and they dont get penalized..

yes, but you need to be a crazily spamming bastard to make it kick in...

I have read if you get too many links too fast. Google will view them as spamming or paid links and not give full credit untill they are deemed permanent. Will not sandox you but could penalize your rankings or not give you the full pr untill a certain amount of time elapses. Don't really know if my site has been penalized for this. BUt I have had sites go up and down in the search for certain keywords within days. In other words on page one one day then no where the next but still be indexed and then a few days later be on page one or two. Not sure why that happend.
