Subdomains and seo

Hi, I was wondering whether subdomains work as good as regular domains when I am trying to rank them. For example, I have a site using my main domain name for one niche but for different niche to save some money on buying a new domain I am planning to create a subdomain, would it rank as good as regular domain from seo perspective?

You can create subdomains on your main domain, and then with a new domain name point redirect to it, and then create a separate niche there.

So your only really paying for domain names, an you get those for less than $5

wow, nice idea.
Since I have linux vps probable I should just somehow set up multiple domains on it. I don't know why but I thought domains are more expensive than just 5$

The way most people work, is they buy shared hosting, which is linked to a domain. They then create 20-30 subdomains (obviously with domain names pointing to them)

Once the site starts to pay, it usually gets moved to its own IP, or the group gets moved to a dedicated.

Some people prefer to have separate sites, separate ip's. But if your starting off you don't need to go that far. Matt Cutts has confirmed this is ok, plus if your a "small webmaster" then its reasonable to expect you have 20-30 "clients"

Not 100% sure, but when there is a footprint, there is always a chance it might be.

Most of the time, the sub domain works just like a new domain, with 0 authority - you'll start everything anew. With so many algorithm updates, it appears that the link juice does not flow from root to sub.domain.com anymore. But if it's a sub folder, domain.com/subdomain, then the link juice may flow from root, when properly linked.

If you have multiple niches on the same site, even with subdomains, it could get tricky to maintain and might confuse Google as to your site's focus. I've seen enough to think that subdomains do get some juice, afterall Google is going after "subdomain renting" because it transfers some authority on some level. If apple.fruit.com started at zero instead of getting a portion of fruit.com's authority (made-up site that's all about fruit), I don't think that Google would care about sites like BuySunglasses.fruit.com

Just my two cents though, I could be wrong but then again I could be right.
