Need Suggestions for buying a laptop

I need to buy a laptop because there is a massive electricity crisis in my country. Electricity goes after every 1 hour for 1-2 hours and I don't think this condition will change any time soon. Under such conditions I can't continue to work as I am working on several new and old projects and this condition is preventing me to reach my target.

My Budget: $500

I just need it for simple tasks like surfing internet, running a few simple programs. Give me some suggestions.

A laptop isn't exactly going to save you. The price range is a bit low too, unless you go for a second hand unit which may or may not have a faulty battery.

I've had both TOSHIBA and ASUS in the past and never had any problem. Good luck
Edit: I forgot to say, all of them are manufacturer refurbished. I've bought in the past manufacturer refurbished cameras and laptops and never had any problem. Opinions may vary here but as I said I've never had any problem with this, I guess its more or less about being lucky.

Look at samsung laptops too (with DOS.). I bought one for my brother recently at INR 32500 which had 4gbs of RAM, 750GB hard disk, Intel I3 3rd gen processor, 1GB dedicated ATI radon graphics.. I can't remember the model name now, but it was awesome to say the least. Go to a samsung dealer and ask him about it (tell him that you need a laptop which has DOS, not windows. bring it home and you know what to do with it )...

get a i7 + 8gb RAM + 1TB HDD .

before comparing check if it is x64 or x32 [ x32 is also called x84 or x86 ]

Look at the Asus x401u. I went through this same thing this weekend (shopped all weekend) comparing laptops. I ordered a manufacturer refurbished off eBay and it was $259.95. Not a bad deal and they all come with a 90 day warranty from Asus.

You could get yourself a diesel generator. It costs less than 500$ and provides current as long as you have gas. A laptop runs out in 1-2 hours max. You can power up more than one PC and have the fridge cool your beer too.

And how come you have internet connection if the power goes down constantly? What powers the routers? I assume the power outage is on large areas..

I have recently bought a UPS {uninterrupted power supply} + Battery which is capable of running 2 fans, 4 bulbs and a few other things. So this will power up the router. Unfortunately the UPS cannot produce so much power to run my computer.

Also you are saying true that I can buy a generator but then I will have to buy the diesel each and every day which will bring more expenses on the other hand, a laptop will save me a lot of money.

choose the biggest , i choose biggest and now when i work on small laptops , i feel like screen is too small .

Buy an UPS or extra battery for your laptop. with $500 I dont think you can buy a decent laptop for IM or designing purposes.
