I use adsense, and just create articles based on longtail keywords. That's it dude. No fancy stuff, no backlinks. Quick, simple, don't give up, not every keyword ranks as well as others.

Other then adsense, you can use affiliate programs and once your blog have lots of traffic , Sponsorships - which you sell them ad space and mention them in your blog.

The main key is content content content! When it comes to blogs, you will not be recognized if you have useless/rubish content or no content at all! Sure, SEO is important, but focus on content first, then look on monetizing your content, then look at upscaling.
