If you don't know what htaccess is, then better not bother to use it, because it can kill a site if not used properly.
FYI, .htaccess file is nothing but a text file with .htaccess extension with some apache rules. If you need more info, then use google. I specially prefer the following article, as it has been written very neatly...

I used htaccess file when I was needing to change the homepage url shown on the address bar for my wordpress site.

Other than that, I have not used this file for other purpose.
