Hey guys :)
Just one quick question..

Giveaways > Random selection, YES or NO?

Why i ask is..
I see at least 2-3 giveways per day with random winners picking
And i remember i was called out and got 2 of my giveaways threads locked and deleted because i used random selection.

So finally i want to know...is it allowed to run giveaways like that or no.
Does that depends from mod to mod or?

No hard feelings..just want to know since i plan more giveaways soon.

Thanks guys :)

Cheers

You cannot have a random selection, but you can
incorporate a limitation on who gets it. For instance,
your giveaway can be limited to members with at
least X-amount of posts, or Jr. VIP's or Donors, etc.

If you see that someone is using a "random selection"
process, feel free to report it.

Random selection is basically the same as "crowdsourcing" which is not allowed on BHW.

Thanks Wiz.
All clear now :)

Been wondering the same as well. One thing you said there goes against what happened to me, i limited my giveaway to 99 spots via a random number and this was closed

I will bring this thread to the attention of my fellow staff members.
It may require that we make some adjustments to the rules and
restrictions in the Freebies/Giveaways section.

Thank You For Your Input. :)

Can I have some clarification, do I understand it that I can make an offer to three people and simply pick the three out of those interested, as long as they met my requirements, but I cannot use Random.org (or roll dice, slice up pig entrails, or whatever).

In other words I can pick whomever I want to instead of giving everybody an equal chance at it.

I do have that right, correct?

Can I choose by asking people in the thread to vote for whom they want to receive the (whatever) by thanking their post and the post with the most thanks wins?

Not sure this is an acceptable way to use the "thanks" system, but cannot figure out a way for the readers of the thread to vote on a winner.

Maybe some day when your programmers are bored you can put in a mechanism in that forum to invoke a vote from the people in the thread.?

In short, NO. Contests of any kind are not allowed here.

Assuming that you can create a poll after a thread has been opened,

Wouldn't you just be able to open up a poll with the names of the people and then just have members vote for them. I find this better than using the "thanks" system.

Personally, i did not even know this, so thanks for bringing this up, i had a giveaway a couple of weeks back for domains, and worded that i would pick someone at random from the posts if they wanted one, but i ended up just selecting what i thought was the best members that would benefit from it, is there a better way i should have done this?

Rules are posted in the section stickies:

http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/freebies-giveaways/472210-warning-rules-before-posting-here.html

blackhat-seo/f174-freebies-giveaways/
section has a stickie entitled
freebies-giveaways/548768-warning-contest-sweepstakes-threads-will-deleted.html
which should clarify the situation for you.
