Why offer links if you do this?

I have a question to ask about signature links. I have a friend who has a travel site and he posted some posts on a travel forum so he could use a signature link. I have read his posts and they were good and to the point and added some valuable info. Well the travel site banned him saying that he was only there to get a link back to his site. Yes he was but he was not spamming in any way and his info was useful. Why are sites like this? Were they afraid of the competition?

Your definition of spamming may not be the owners definition of spamming. It's kinda silly to ask us to speak for the motivations of a stranger.

It sounds like they got it right then. Their forum and their rules. Move on to another where your friend can get a link to stick. Or better yet, move to a better platform that carries more SEO value and stick rates.

Not silly. He just wants to know why someone would do this. Maybe someone else on here has had a similar experience.

Every forum has its rules. You'd better read the rules in detail to find out the reasons.

They allowed signature links, there were no rules against what he was posting. He had made sure to read the rules well before posting.
I wonder do you think that they were afraid of his competition since they were similar niches?

The problem with a question like this is, as myownhero points out, you are asking us to get into the head of a site owner we do not know, therefore anything you get here is pure speculation. The answer could be as simple as that particular site owner is a dick.

Owners of popular sites tend to be very, very sick of spam and have little tolerance for it. I have a blog that gets TONS of spam comments every day. I will let people in my niche post a link, but only if I get to know them, and they've made comments with no links before. Do I care that somebody read my post and carefully crafted a comment if it's clearly just intended to link back to their site? No, and it doesn't get through my moderation. You can't expect the world to want to help you.

So what should your friend do differently? Hide the links better, like putting the link in a smiley, or move on and find a less moderated place to post.

I agree that we can not get into the owners head but the OP just wanted some reasons as to why the owner did this. I say he is just being a d#ck, my personal thought of it.

Newsflash: Internet Marketing is the only niche that forum owners allow the free promotion of commercial websites and I am talking about quality posts not Spam. I found that the hard way.
