I wouldn't flame OP for that. Frankly speaking I faced the same situation some times back and I didn't have any fuckin idea how to set that up. So what did I do? I searched every document available on internet on installing a linux VPS and it did the trick! Now I can proudly say that I can setup a VPS without anyone's help. There is a first time for everything.
On a positive note, if he manages to learn setting up servers, he can really make business with that. I have seen guys charging $60 per hour for these kind of job (and I won't say it's unfair because it's really a tough job for sure).
Go for it OP. Just remember, that if anything bad happens, just reinstall the OS....

The provider backing it is a very decent provider (edis.at), and if you want a linux desktop go into the solus (if thats what they are providing) control panel and reinstall with a linux gnome desktop. That way you can connect to it using something like VNC

what is the version operating system installed? did you ask your provider if the ssh port is different? Also are you sure you are connecting to main IP?

Yeah I agree with you, wasn't really trying to flame the OP, even though it did sound like that after I read it again. I'm just mainly surprised that alot of these guys are just jumping right into something without even taking the time to read a manual. I mean Like you I was in the same boat years back, hell we all were at some point or another, but with all detailed manuals found all over google with a simple search, I'm just surprised that alot of people don't take 5 min to read a manual, or online tutorial.

have you tried the lowendbox vps from solidseovps ? they are very fast also they provide seo vps on 1gbps for 15usd monthly... just got mine!

OP, though people might laugh at you don't bother, thats what people do and have to do.
on a first note people will make fun , but if you invested in something and ready to put your heart in it till you set it right then I am sure nothing else is come along your way, many people will appreciate that and might join to help you, may be for free too...where there is a will there is always a way...
please note most of the people learn swimming by taking their plunge in water and drowning and they do turn out to be the experts ... wish you luck friend
