Do web hosts monitor your websites?

I know web hosts do monitor peoples website to collect traffic data, but do they(or can they) monitor the content of your websites? Do they have access to your databases, software, folders and stuff? Let's say if I am going to start up a video sharing forum, but I will make the threads open for registered members only and not the public, then will my web host still have access to those threads?

Yes, web hosts have access to all data on the server - files, databases, etc.

If you want to make harder for them (but not impossible) to see what's on your account, get a dedicated server.

wow, that sounds bad, and I feel insecure now, so does that mean, if my web host receive a law complaint( eg from DMCA) about my website, then my web hosts could easily hand all the data of my website to them and get me into trouble ...( has this happened to someone before?)

do web hosts normally monitor their clients websites and check their files and databases thou?

a dedicated server is very expensive, I wonder if a Virtual private server will do?

shared, dedicated, vps it does not matter, the hosting provider have access to your files and if in sla(tos) said that tey will provide this info to "police" then tey will , but in general they do not follow directly, operate only signal in 99% of cases

VPS can still be easily accessed by your hosting provider. Most of them will not monitor your data and traffic, though, as it's time consuming.

To add extra layer to security, have your domain's DNS hosted by CloudFlare (cloudflare.com), which will hide the actual IP of your server. Complaint makers would need to take extra steps to find your host and make a complaint. Again, harder for them to do, but not impossible.

I see, but most web host companies use a similar TOS, even the offshore(ones that claim that they ignore DMCA) do use the same TOS, and saying no copyrighted materials etc, so.....
but you are also saying that most hosts don't do that even if their clients do break the TOS, they don't hand their data to the "police". so I guess I can rest assured that I will be fine even if I share copyrighted material on my website??

so I can use the C loud F lare thing(is it expensive?) with a shared web host, or I need to get my own server first in order to use it? ( I am new to this)
