I'm new to all this SEO stuff, but I'm a tad confused regarding the keywords, is it recommended to use surrounding text and if I don't use surrounding text, would I still be required to put my keywords in the format such as: #a#iManage#a#?

If you don't use surrounding text, you provide your keyword in normal way.
