So I bought a domain about 6 months ago when I originally wanted to start IM. However I realized after I bought It that I didn't really have the time to work on it. Now I have all the time in the world. So I went back & got my domain pointed to a host. It's in the electronics niche & I was just going to make a landing page for my amazon store. Which I did about a week ago.

2 days later for kicks I went & checked out how my site was ranked. It's ranked 9th on the first page of Google! I went to look at the competition & monthly searches on Google's Adwords Keyword Tool & it says it has 60k global monthly searches & 33k local & that it's a high competition keyword. Is this possible?

I have the exact .net keyword as my domain name, but It's not built at all. All I have is my home page, contact us, & privacy policy page & there's nothing on the contact & privacy policy page at all yet. Also the home page only has the header & my amazon store on it. No back links or anything like that. Just wordpress & the basic all-in-one seo plugin & a few other plugins. Nothing else related to seo.

So my question is how is this possible? It's been #9 on the first page of google for 6 days now. Today is 7 days. Can Google adwords tool be wrong about the monthly searches & the fact is says it's high competition?

Have you done your volume searches in "Exact Match" ?

Yes I have & the search volume is lower. Only a little under 2000 local, but I'm ranked #2!!! lmao. & I don't see how that really matters anyway cause how often do people that are looking to buy do exact match? It's a pretty good keyword too IMO.

Even if I'm doing a broad search & not exact match. I don't see how I can be on the first page for 6 days (maybe longer I didn't check) With almost no SEO at all. Especially with that niche. You would think I would be beat out by a lot of companies hands down. Its a 3 word keyword.

Exact match matters and even if you were #1 you wont be getting all the exact match traffic especially if you are in a tough niche. If you are in a competitive niche, you have the 3 ads and other Google crap mopping up the majority of the visits and if you are less than #1 you are getting the left over scraps.

Another thing, Google often lie about how many searches there are per month so in many cases, it's less than even the exact match and then you have to look at where you are on the page. If you are at #9 for most world wide Google searches, you are getting next to nothing.

Hi,
Google Keyword Tool is often wrong, but for the volume of searches only "exact match" searches count, and when it say's High competition it's for the ads (the number of ads running for that keyword) not the serp competition.

I do understand that, but If I have a ranking of #9 with no seo, how hard could it really be to take #1 or 2? The .com for my keyword isn't in use so I don't have to worry about that. & with the exact match I'm already number 2. & how does exact traffic really matter that much? How many people that know nothing about SEO go typing their searches in quotes?

Can you guys recommend another keyword tool I should use If google adwords is a liar? I would greatly appreciate it!

Did you see if the domain was registered before you got it? maybe it already has links point to it .Also look at the keyword market samurai. I have had a emd rank in less then 2 weeks with 0 content , less then 2,000 searches a month though

Well I bought it fresh from godaddy. I don't know how to check if it was ever used before. All I know is that the .com was taken, but never built up. It said the .net was available so I bought it for $10.

& thank you for that keyword tool! It looks very promising. I appreciate it.

You are going to get the most accurate data with Adwords. Most other SEO tools use Google's API so you are going to get the same results. The most accurate way to find out how much traffic there really is for a keyword is to run PPC, but this isn't always viable for 99% of marketers out there. You would actually be surprised how accurate Google's keyword data really is though. Yes, it can be off, especially with seasonal and trending type keywords, but overall it is the best traffic data tool out there.

As far as why you are ranking #9, there could be many reasons. You could be showing personal results, the site could've been owned previously and optimized for that term (as mentioned above), or your on page is very good and G finds your page very relevant. With 2K exact searches you should only be getting around 2% of total search volume at #9. So in this case you are looking at 40 visitors per month. That is just over 1 visit per day. It's impossible to tell you how hard it would be to get #1 without seeing the competition.

Market Samurai pulls their data from Google Keyword Tool. Just FYI.

Indeed , but market samurai will give you a idea of the organic competition for that word. Market samurai is magic for keywords if used correctly

Right, I use a different tool for that, but his question was about keyword traffic volume. Either way, I love MS. Great tool. Lots of people talk shit about it, but I think it is still a very viable tool.
