How Google calculates the age of a domain?

For example: if a domain was registered in 2004, but after 1 year it expired, and now I register that domain, it means that I will own a 9 years old domain?

Google doesn't rely on whois, from what I know.

Matt Cuts always says whois information is one of many important points. Of course a content rich website with stable whois will provide higher trust compared to a frequently changing site with thin to no content.

Yeah it goes on the age of registration, it's age only goes on whilst it's actively registered.
