Please answer , what if my website has only internal links but no external links will this help me in my ranking.

so, you can't boost your ranking by yourself, you need other sites to link to your site

People sometimes use "external links" to mean links TO other sites. Maybe this is what the OP means? Although links TO other sites may lose link juice, some people feel that they give your site more credibility to Google - you are not seen to be trying to hoard your link juice

ahh, if he is talking about outgoing links, then simply ignore my posts...

if thats the case, i don't think OUT links have something to do with your own ranking, unless you make your site a linkfarm and start lossing rankings because of that

It will not help you. But it is important also in terms of seo. In terms of seo you need to have very quality external links to get high ranking and visibility in SERP. Your site will be more valuable if you have quality with quantity with your niche links.
Remember without external links nobody can see your site.

No it won't

It will lower the pagerank of various pages of your site - but unless you're selling text links on pageranked pages of your site, it makes no difference to you

Things get tricky with theme-bleed if you link out to external pages that are not highly relevant - but you are not thinking of doing that are you?

I think the OP means outbound links and not external links.

I always put wikipedia related link on my sidebar..
but I am not sure whether it will bring any benefit or harm..
