For those of you who use dedicated servers, is the speed of the server really noticeable as users are browsing whatever you're hosting? Or is the speed similar to shared hosting?

is much faster that the shared one all you have the total control, you can install whatever you want and change anything

I use dedicated servers for both desktop applications and site hosting. I can tell you from experience in a desktop environment a dedicated server is way faster.

While hosting sites. If the traffic is minimal i have not seen a difference. On the other hand receiving large amounts of traffic with a lot of queries, things like product searches being processes / java/ajax being ran , I can notice a noticeable difference in page load speeds. With a dedicated server vs a VPS with the same hardware specifications the dedicated server is always faster.

With that said. Most people DO NOT need dedicated servers.

If you have a dedicated server running a video sharing site and you got 300 people watching 1080p and then another plain html site, it will load slow.
If you have a shared host and the same plain html site, it may run fast or slow depending on what the other sites are getting for load.

Dedicated gives you control over your server, shared does not A shared host however may have a 1/2/5/10gbps line for it though whereas with a dedicated you normally only get 100mbps unless you pay alot for a dedicated 100/1000/2000/5000/10000.
