Where is the catch with 99 cent domains ?

Hey,

Ive been wondering.. Where is the catch with 99 cent domains at places like GoDaddy and register .com ?
Why dont for example namecheap offer this, well more than twice a decade... Ive been considering getting some for a bulk project and it would really cut down my costs for the first year, and by next year theyd be earning already.

Is it worth getting 99 cent domains instead of the usual namecheap reliable and tested solution ?

namecheap does offer this but for new accounts only (you can create multiple accounts but i think that violates ToS). I just recently purchased 2 .com's for .99 with free whoisguard from namecheap this March. Just frequently check the domains forum here in BHW, got the link from there.

Thats what I was kind of expecting, what about godaddy ? They have these regularly and I think you can buy more than one, is it still reasonably priced for second year ? After a year most of them should be earning nicely and those that arent wouldnt be renewed either way...

Yes, Godaddy is reasonably priced. Godaddy lets those deals go is for three reasons:

1. To increase the amount of domains clients who host with them own. They base their hosting prices on the number of domains hosted, so more domains = more money for them from hosting.
2. Renewals and new customers, obviously.
3. Their marketing budget is huge.

In godaddy, you can have it renewed by $7/year.

Register.com is f*cking retarded if you want to transfer your domain out. You will need to drop them a call to transfer your domain out of them.

Melbourne IT is the same scam as is NS. They make it very difficult to transfer out and charge up to 60 bucks for annual renewal.

Is there any registrar that does unlimited domains for 99 cents each? Or are they always limited to 1 per account? I have a huge list of domains I need to register and don't want to pay $XXX for the first year.

Usually what happens is in a year you'll end up searching through all the coupon websites for active coupons to keep your whois guard active and renewal price down , but it goes up to about $13-$14 per .com I've had experience with..

Given that you'll have made much much more off of it thanks to BHW it's always a good investment
