50% drop in visits

Hi,

One of my websites, that usually had around 1500-1800 visits a day, suffered a 50% drop in visits starting from March 6th, 2013.

No major changes to the site were done that day, despite a new banner (with a link to a Facebook app) and a new calendar with events (a basic calendar in php without javascript - html basically).
There haven't been any warnings in Google's Webmaster Tools either. Any idea of what's going on?

Its almost impossible to say that you were affected or were not affected by an update or what is going on with your site without some detailed information. For instance possible culprits could be the algorithm update but were you doing anything that could have caused you to get penalized? If so, start there.

Another possibility is your hosting provider. Sometimes providers will reject traffic to your domain because bandwidth limits have been exceeded. Have you tried looking there (1800 visits a day is pretty heavy).

Another possibility is that there could be some kind of conflict with the javascript code that you added with the Analytics tracking snippet (although this seems unlikely).

If you were in fact doing everything right and you have ruled out any other possibilities, you can always reach out to Google to tell them you are being unfairly penalized. Thee have made mistakes before.

But the Panda update (which Google never confirmed) was believed to be rolled out on Friday, 8th or Monday, 11th March, right?

No, it was up since 6th -7th... you are talking about an announcement made by Matt Cuts of a new update witch didn't come

Matt cutts said, now panda will gradually roll out and seems now there will be no official update in future.

I also confirm google panda update start from 6th march.

It's easy to say its Panda or Matt Cutts peeing on your cake. The truth of the matter is that you've given very little info for one to make a concrete reason as to what happened. Just saying traffic went down on a particular day is not enough.

for all we know, your site could have been flagged for spam, you could have forgotten to pay for hosting, panda may have been used, you may have used sape.......and on and on and on.

What you need to do is to trust someone with your site who will have the stats and they will tell you what happened. Right now, there are too many reasons why this happened and you are likely to believe anything anyone tells you.
