HOW IS THIS DONE? Getting your links into blog posts.

I've been researching my competitor's backlinks to see if I can get some of my own and often I come across their links embedded in sites like this

stompboxnetworks [dot!] com

Or completely legitimate looking old sites like

officemuseum [dot!] com/photo_gallery_1900s_ii [dot] htm

I'm confused as to how they manage to get their links into those articles. Are these sites hacked or something? Can you shed any light?

jr_sci, most likely hit it right on the nose. It is more than likely just a private blog network.

yeah, those sites look like either your competitor built them by himself or are part of a private blog network where he purchased backlinks from.

it all depends on how the owner operate the network.. buying some links from there is safe enough, especially if you build and other backlinks so you have a diversity of backlinks..

You don't really have to follow your competitors footstep. Its good to know what he's up too, then move ahead, look for other stuff. BTW there are no dates on that page. Remember things change with time. Open blogs close-up, do follow forums go no follow and so on. Look for others, that's what makes the game interesting.

You can always get aged expired PR domains and build up own blog network. It is not as hard as it sounds and you usually won't need 100's of them, 10-30 niche specific blogs will improve your ranks and let other people wonder how did they get links from those sites
