I am not sure about this, but I think if you try to redeem a valid code, it will ask you if you are sure to redeem it or confirm the redemption. You can then cancel and be sure your Card is not redeemed. Again am not sure about the confirmation, but anyone who has done this should be able to assist us more.

You can check any code Via a Xbox Live account.. simply goto the section for redeeming codes (from middle menu button) and when you put in the code to redeem it will show you what the code is for.. I.E 4000 points or 12 months... and ask if you want to redeem or cancel.. click the cancel button! if you use the online method "Xbox-tcom" you will be screwed! the online method does NOT give you a chance to back out it WILL redeem the code right then and there to your account.. So I hope that helped :D
 
I had this problem but if I might add something.. paypal terms and services change based on yohr location (paypal germany) for example im american but payoal oyt here states virtual goods are covered to the point that when your scammed they side with them on the grounds for un-authorized transactions.its sh*t but lesson learned. Sold on ebay and they filed it with payal. My advice is if you do sell on a site that you put restrictions on who can buy. I.E- ebay can let u choose if the person has less then so many transactions (10...) then they can not click the buy buttom or there paypal has to be conected to there ebay. Another good one I use now is country and region you will not ship to (or email codes) I found that alot of scammers come from certian countries sucks but true. lastly if they have so many non payments in the oast (1 month or 6 month or even year ( I use this to weed out non payers and new acvountsade to scam ppl.
