Case Study: Does directory submission have any impact on SERP

I have 2 site ranked 22 and 23 for my keyword. Both site were created the same day, have zero backlinks and are optmised the same way. They are both blogs with different content. but same KW density.

both have the domain mykeyword.org and mykeyword.net.

I will send 1000 directory submission to mykeyword.org and report back in this thread in a couple of weeks to see the difference in rankings.

The backlinks should make a big difference. Especially if you can optimize your anchor text.

Couple weeks might not be long enough to really see the effect of a campaign like this.

Most established directories will bury your listing deep in the site if you don't pay. Those pages are indexed, but infrequently. Newer directories will get your listing posted towards the top of the category, but they have less authority since they aren't established and thus again it will take time for your link to show up.

Make sure you use unique keywords, descriptions in as many submissions as possible. Duplicates will result in links being devalued.

I know how much work it would take, but would it be worth it?

I'd rather make a list of urls of those directory pages where you submitted your link, upload it to an established website ( or couple of them ) and then get some links to it.

The question IMO isn't will you get backlinks, but will the search engines ignore those backlinks knowing their nature.

My experience has been that directory submission works like article submission. While you usually don't get a ton of quality links right away, over time as they build up they deliver more quality traffic.

If you want faster results, try social bookmarking, and rss feeds.

Ive given up on this because my sites dropped to 250ish result for my keyword. dunno why.

Also it took forever to get my 1000 submissions. Only 8 of them show as yahoo backlinks now.

My opinion : Dont bother.

Unlucky mate, I have been using directory submissions for quite a while now and if you use some software you can add to 1k directories in a day withiout too much hassle. I would suggest adding no more than 100 a day though as this will spread out the links a bit more naturally.

You may not see the results quickly but they will keep your links coming in and you should see your sites slowly rising up the ranks. Yahoo and MSN have been very responsive to my directory submissions Top 10 to #1 position for some fairly competitive UK terms for me just off directory submissions and ~20 blog comments.

Don't forget that all backlinks help. If you don't want to spend weeks adding to directories try a software called digixmas directory submitter, its very quick and easy to use.

i would go for social bookmark compare to directory submission. no manual approval.

@mesol - matt cutts says anything that is not moderated would be devalued. Directories at least have some moderation

Like any other links quality links from directory will definitely helps to get SERP.
