I know article directories are terrible for seo and could get your site penalized if you do too much of it, but I was wondering if it was the same with press releases? I haven't had much experience doing press releases so I was wondering if anyone who had can give me some tips.

The reason why article directories submissions gets a site penalize is because they are usually done in "Quantity". Meaning like 1000 links in 2-3 days. That's why.

Usually with press releases you could never get close to that number and it's just a few links here and there every few days. With my personal experience I did experience a little boost from the press releases since they come from inner pages of very strong domains. I liked the real traffic visitors PR generated though.

But yeah you can't compare article submissions vs Press Releases IMO.

Just wonder the reason for penalty from article directories? I agree with ca3s4r. It looks like you use tools with a huge links per day, right? for press release, take the high quality content and most of sites from HP and strong domain. Let use it as Tier 1 and I thinh it brings a good result for you!

The reason why you get penalties from so called article directories submissions is because they usually drop 1000+ links in less than a week. Not to mention how "low quality" these so called "directories" are.

You can say goodbye to your site's rankings if it's fairly new. But if it's got enough authority to survive such a blast then by all means try it.

They were also called link farms. And it's a really bad idea post to some random article directories to raise website rankings.

Press release is more way better and safer. But it's not so easy as making article directories backlinks. You must show different attitude and press release articles has more informational value than normal articles. If you provide low value and poor informational articles, they wouldn't be accepted at all.

Press releases are considered safer but you really should be providing actual news or something that is "press worthy" rather than spam.

That's why they called Press releases, not spam releases

besides, almost all high quality press release sites always moderate the contents that will be published on their sites, so there will be lack of chance the contents are spammy

Press release sites are best way to get traffic and SEO value. You cant compare it with Article directories. Article directories are spammed to death as compared to Press release sites.

If reasonable number of press releases has been submitted manually, they work quite well for driving traffic as well as for facilitating online presence of a site in question. However, press releases are unlikely to result in a massive backlink boost, and that's why any penalty is unlikely to follow-up.

The power of press releases - apart from backlinks they provide - is that they actually make possible to share your content with a wider audience and subsequently promote your site. For instance, press releases can actually help to reach journalists, bloggers or editors. This may result in new networking opportunities to be used for guest posts, press articles, affiliate offers. Moreover, press release submissions may get your article right on Google News and, if this has been the case, your site's online exposure will increase and your web pages will get backlinks not only from the PR itself, but from industry news as well.

Even though you distribute only a few press releases - they will still be beneficial in terms of rankings too, especially if you target low competition keywords. So, if you use press releases not entirely for getting backlinks, but for sharing your content and reaching customers and niche players, this practice is absolutely legit and won't result in getting your site penalized.

Press releases are also a good way to diversify your backlink profile. To make press releases more successful, I recommend submitting press release after you already have major topics in your niche covered (for example, if you are in the "car" niche, you have already explained the basics of buying cars, maintaining them, etc.). This way, your chances of being published are much higher, since website owners will see your website as high quality.

It also looks more natural to Google if press release is submitted after the site already has some authority.

totally agree, you cannot just create back-links like this any-more.
