I pick up languages quickly. I think it is because I moved to many different countries when I was little.
English (American): Main
Mandarin: Studied for 10 years, live in China off and on. Can understand most conversations, can speak in response on most occasions. Can write most of the common characters, but it takes me longer than a fluent speaker when it comes to reading the newspaper. A couple days ago I was getting ready for a flight and a couple children spoke in Mandarin about how I was hairy like an ape (I had not shaved for a couple of weeks) and I turned around and told them I was secretly a monkey that eats children in Chinese. Their parents were amused.
Spanish: I loathe Spanish. I unfortunately know Spanish very well. I think the language sounds like shit phonetically and native speakers give me a headache.
Hebrew & Yiddish: Speaking it from birth as my parents pushed it. Probably my gateway language.
Languages I do not know very well, but if you spoke it to me slowly with the understanding that I don't understand 100%, I can usually comprehend what is being said and possibly be able to respond:
French: Some of my family speak it fluently, so a little has rubbed off on me. French Canadians and Louisiana French, who settled in both areas when my fathers' side of the family came to the U.S. in the late 1800's
Russian: Love Russian, I hope to study it more with someone on Skype in the future. I really wish I knew it more.
German: Lived in Germany for a year or two when I was younger. I picked up some words, and I think knowing English makes knowing German a little easier.
Swedish: I love trying to speak Swedish because I can understand it a lot more than I can speak it, but when I speak it I have some problems with grammar so I haven't been able to really speak it with someone 1 on 1. I'll probably end up trying to pay someone to teach me more directly because I hope to live there when I am 40. I just spent a couple of weeks there on vacation not too long ago and was very comfortable in Stockholm but will probably move to a smaller area. While I was trying to learn more Swedish, 99% of the people there were more interested in showing off their English, lol.
