Thank you, I found a lot duplicate content on my site that I never notice .

Thanks OP I know allot of people definitely need to take a close look at possible duplicate content as well
as on site SEO (One in the same) Good thread for those who dropped in rankings and looking for the possible cause.

Maybe it was not the Big G after all :)

Cheers!

This is quite strange beacuse if your new articles are automatically seen on homepage so you have automatically duplicate content.
For example you have published article and it is shown on your homepage under www.example.com
But it is also seen on the article url on www.example.com/article

Is it problem? Beacuse there are many websites which have something like that.

dup content within your own site structure is bad. Dup content from site A with site B does not matter.

Right, there is nothing wrong with this. I have searched and talked about this in depth. Look at this video and read this article and I think you will see this is fine.

I think they update youtube...
I can not put my comment on top comments
you can put your comments on top ?

What am gonna say here is, if you think you have good link profile and yet you seen sudden deep in rankings, this is when to take a look out your overall site and see what your doing wrong, I bet most of the time is something do with the site and not link building

Ok, so let's say my most popular article has 20 similar articles with content match ranging from 30% to 12%. The question is what % is acceptable? Because if it's a niche site, then almost certainly duplicate content is unavoidable.

If you have WMT this will tell you if you have Duplicate info. I look at it all the time to make sure we are in good standing.

Edit: I also have read up on this issue and coming straight from the G if you have a few words the same then this is not really duplicate content to google. If you have the whole page the same and a few words different this is duplicate content.

Also having the same content on other sites from yours is not duplicate content but it is syndicated content.

Read this article and watch the video in it. It might help a few of you to understand the difference between things.

its not true WMT tell about duplicate contents. or is it? i never see duplicate issue in WMT, and OP mention tool that is helpful to find duplicate, and i am surprise, my content writers did duplicate posts or same contents on smimilar topics.

WMT not show any duplicate contents.

does content under tags in wordpress also deemed as duplicate content?

Actually your wrong. I did not say it goes over everything on the website that is duplicate but it goes over your html if you want me to be more precise. Did you firstly even watch the video and read the article I had linked? Obviously you did not. Look at the snippit of WMT.

Interesting subject duplicate internal content!

I have a wordpress blog on a site that has category, tag, recent posts and archives running down the left. Posts on the blog are given similar tags and there are only 6 categories shared between them all, archives list all posts also and recent posts obviously duplicates internal content. Running the site through siteliner gives me a 92% duplicate content result basically because the category, tags, archives are all indexed as separate pages with the same content!!

So how do i fix this ? Remove 3 of the 4 category, tags, archives, recent posts or block some using webmaster tools ?

LOL dup content is defiantly a myth, i have about 200 sites with 200/500 pages with 94% dup content on the same .info domain, the only difference between the content is the city name...

And these sites are getting me leads for my clients every single day for about 2,5 years now, of the 200 sites only 3 got effected by the panda update, changed the content with new content that was 94% the same and after 2 months i had 90% of my listings back.

So i don't know about your site and what the problem was, but i am certain that it had nothing to do with a piece of dup content that you had to "digg" for, I know for a fact that dup content in anyway is a big, huge myth...

And also there are thousands of news sites which gets duplicated content everday

my sites have internal duplicate content and I don't see any drop in rankings.

I agree with this one and have seen my clients competitor putting the same damn dupe content all over his site and just changing city names. I can't guarantee this will work and you might get slapped for it but as of now he is still ranking for the last 2 years, It's probably this fc-dh guy heh. To all those saying it's not possible at all, stop regurgitating the same SEO propaganda.

Use Wordpress SEO by Yoast and noindex your tags, archives, categories.

Unless I am misunderstanding I think you are wrong, Google decides what to pull as your snippet and sometimes this can be any page on your site, especially if your site is a blog. Therefore your snippet for your url, could be the same as a recent post.

Although your point might be valid about the duplicate content, saying it outright that there is no update but it's only a site problem is funny.

Yes, it could be an onsite problem, but not necessarily mean there is no update.

I'll say this again to those who say that there's no need of an update to lose rank.

Of course.. but if a lot of webmasters in most of the SEO and IM sites/forum is talking about it in the same time.. there is definitely something is going on.

We are not just talking about personal sites here. :)

You can also see at mozcast the spike on serps ranking in past 3 days.

Now, lets assume it is about internal duplicate as you said. If this penalty has been in their algo for a long time, why is it it only hit now?

Again let's assume it about Dup Content, The reason it only caught up with so many site at the same time is they either include it in their algo, or they improve their current algo about "let again assume it about dup content"

Either way, there should be an update to hit so many sites at the same time.

I see a lot of thread about how google update affected their site, and yes you might have been ranking for a while before, and then google caught up with your site.

And majority seems to think it's their SEO provider, this can be the truth, and most of the time it's your site. For example, one of my sites currently rank on page 1, always hold the spot, however for some reason I lost few rankings. I started digging into why this might happen, The site have perfect link profile you would ever see.

I dig and dig and found that I got internal duplicate content, alot of people might think this is a myth, this is not. How do you find if you have internal duplicate content?

By just using this example can show if you truly have true internal duplicate content site:www.example.com "the snippet from your content" and paste this on google, if you see the snippet showing more than twice on multiple URLs then you have a problem, this needs to be taken off. I checked some of my clients and saw they have this problem, and yet you get people who scream about how they've been affected by Google Updates.

No it's not Google update its your site. Check your site thoroughly if you think you have unusual drop in rankings like

Over optimisation (link profile been on par)
Duplicate content (both internal and external content)

After removing all this multiple internal content, the rankings return.

Just my quick 2 cent.

Goodluck
