Its Not Google Update - Its Your Site

I see a lot of thread about how google update affected their site, and yes you might have been ranking for a while before, and then google caught up with your site.

And majority seems to think it's their SEO provider, this can be the truth, and most of the time it's your site. For example, one of my sites currently rank on page 1, always hold the spot, however for some reason I lost few rankings. I started digging into why this might happen, The site have perfect link profile you would ever see.

I dig and dig and found that I got internal duplicate content, alot of people might think this is a myth, this is not. How do you find if you have internal duplicate content?

By just using this example can show if you truly have true internal duplicate content site:www.example.com "the snippet from your content" and paste this on google, if you see the snippet showing more than twice on multiple URLs then you have a problem, this needs to be taken off. I checked some of my clients and saw they have this problem, and yet you get people who scream about how they've been affected by Google Updates.

No it's not Google update its your site. Check your site thoroughly if you think you have unusual drop in rankings like

Over optimisation (link profile been on par)
Duplicate content (both internal and external content)

After removing all this multiple internal content, the rankings return.

is there some easy way to find all duplicate contents? what if i have 1000+ posts on my site.? its seems valid point to me.

LOL dup content is defiantly a myth, i have about 200 sites with 200/500 pages with 94% dup content on the same .info domain, the only difference between the content is the city name...

And these sites are getting me leads for my clients every single day for about 2,5 years now, of the 200 sites only 3 got effected by the panda update, changed the content with new content that was 94% the same and after 2 months i had 90% of my listings back.

So i don't know about your site and what the problem was, but i am certain that it had nothing to do with a piece of dup content that you had to "digg" for, I know for a fact that dup content in anyway is a big, huge myth...

It's indeed an update, finding out what kind of update hit you helps finding out what the fix might be, be it removing duplicate or low quality content in case of a Panda.

Yes in every update we learn. and when we maintain quality, remove or update internal duplicate pages is one step toward quality.

I will tell you something here, have seen countless cleints that got hits by panda, zoo animal updates, whatever you want to call it, and guess what they all put blame on the backlinks they bought previously, whereas there is multiple reasons why a site can fall off when there is an google updates and sometimes it's not even buying links or anything.

It's either you have bad site structure, duplicate content issues, or bad link profile.

Edit to add, you don't need google updates to roll before you can see a huge drop in rankings, sometimes this comes to down your overall site. Also I have dealth with over 40 cleints with duplicate content, which when after removing the bad content their rankings return

Remove low content pages and rewrite your contents

What about business listings and press releases? I think this is an exception to the duplicate content issue. For example in business listing sites (superpages, yahoo local, google + pages), they often required the "About" information of your business which is located in your money site's about section then all you have to do is to copy and paste it on these sites. Another is press release, if your money site has a blog and post a press release there, the exact content will be distributed in reputable press release sites like prweb to gain more exposure, traffic, and authority to the money site.

Good you mentioned this, the previous marketing company I worked for local businesses, and I managed over 200 clients every month, and guess what this local business people dont have a clue copying about us page to other directories could do you harm than good. You can get a way with for quiet sometimes after a while you get a huge drop in ranking.

This is one major problem we had with small business at my old job.

Assuming your site lost rankings due to internal duplicate content, I'm curious how long it would take for Google to recognize the duplicate content has been removed. I personally feel it would take until Google does another SERPs update (30-60 days). Any other opinions?

Great tool! What is an acceptable % for duplicate content. I have a site that's penalized on all pages except for the homepage (very strange) and the site is showing37% duplicate content, mostly from category pages. I've noindexed my categories now to see if it returns.

I don't know if duplicate content is the culprit. I have another site with a similar linking profile, 42% duplicate content and this site ranks and survives all the updates. The only difference between them is one is health niche (penalized one), the other is not.

If you have WMT this will tell you if you have Duplicate info. I look at it all the time to make sure we are in good standing.

Edit: I also have read up on this issue and coming straight from the G if you have a few words the same then this is not really duplicate content to google. If you have the whole page the same and a few words different this is duplicate content.

Also having the same content on other sites from yours is not duplicate content but it is syndicated content.

Read this article and watch the video in it. It might help a few of you to understand the difference between things.
