[Advice Needed] Finding Advertisers!

I am looking for a little advice here. I recently got a position in the Business Department of my college's newspaper. I thought it would give me some good experience and something to add to the resume.

I thought this was a volunteer position. It turns out that I receive commission on the ads that I sell. I am working with the Online Advertising department and we have a website that receives around 30,000+ unique views per day. So primarily we are selling CPM ads to both local and national advertisers. I posted a thread in the PPC section to see if any BHW could use the traffic. But I am also looking for some advice.

Clearly, national advertisers are going to have the budget to purchase a large package, resulting in higher commissions for me.

SO!

Who has experience with finding large advertisers that can help me sell some ads and make some money?
I would rather sell 10 people a $2000 contract than sell 100 people a $200 contract.

Where can I find/contact some larger advertisers?

Yes! It's around 36,000 unique pages views a day.

I think it's 95% US traffic. Some alumni who have moved to other countries etc also read. But the large majority is US and the large majority of that is college readership.

We can of course target the views and such. Any suggestions?

Basically, think about it as a site that I own receiving 35,000 uniques per day tightly targeted to the college aged market. How can I sell ads?

If I were you, I would learn how to monetize the traffic yourself.... Then sell any left over inventory (if any) to others.

I should personally learn how to monetize? Or the department should learn how to?
I think selling advertising is the most feasible way of profiting from the traffic.

I just looked at the analytics. It's 120,000/month, so closer to 40,000.

You are trying to determine a valued price without knowing what categories or products would run well on it

Since it IS college and the traffic is rather low, I would suggest putting up some payday loans, and some dating offers on the site and seeing if THEY convert. If not, you could start accepting advertising positions listing local jobs for money, or you could have the students pay a fee to look at the listed local jobs.

It's a website that receives over 30,000 unique visitors a day. That doesn't seem like low traffic to me. We have all the demographics and analytics of the traffic and can target according to the advertisers needs.

We are looking for advertisers that want to appeal to the college market. We have had national advertisers before. So, they were willing to pay at our current prices.

I am looking for ways to get into contact with some new national advertisers and sign some larger contracts.
