I am considering buying a domain which is a net for $1,500. The domain is 11 years old and ranks on page 2 for the exact match. My concern is that the domain is a .net. Before I spend $1,500 I want to make sure it's worth it and I won't have a problem getting it to rank...

You can rank anything really - the extension (especially when as general as .net) doesn't matter. If it's worth it, comes down to you.

Well i personally wouldn't buy the domain for that price whether it is a .net or .com. It ranks on Page 2.. So lot of hard work has to be done to bring it to the top 5 results. Now if I have to do hard SEO work, why would I pay $1500 in the first place? The domain age is good, but you should really research the content and backlinks it has. Other than that, I think com and net is pretty much the same and it all depends on the content...

unless the keyword its ranked for gets hundreds of thousands of searches, page 2 is crappy for an EMD.

.net is fine, (I have 2 .nets atm, and I rank above the .com's)

I would avoid spending that kind of money on a .net personally. They are generally pretty worthless. imho

I personally suggest you to buy .com domain instead of .net specifically if you want to spend this much amount of money!

.com gives authority to your buyers as well!

My advice is that does this domain or site suits your business? Or relate to your business? If yes then you can go ahead.. Or if you simply taking it then you should probably check all the conditions like how much traffic it got, how much sales etc etc

If you can make money (with the keyword on page two) if it were ranking on the top of Google, and you have any related keywords that you can rank to add to this domain by adding content, and the domain is a buying keyword, I would go for the .net.

11 years domain age is nothing to disregard. It creates a hell of a lot of authority just from the age, especially if it had been online continuously. Quality pages on the domain will rise in PR quickly, do it right and you will have an authority site in no time.

If you can add and rank more buying keywords, it will be a goldmine.

A new .com will take a heck of a long time to get that kind of authority.

Do the research and make sure that it has comercial value, if it does, I woudl go for it.

If the leyword has no commercial value, buy the .com.

Unless you go for an already well-developed brand, it doesn't make any sense to spend such an amount on a .net domain.

I believe that a brandable domain name is better than one that isn't. Some may disagree with me on this, but I tend to think that less and less weight will be placed on EMD's (exact match domains) moving forward.
Without knowing any of the specifics, $1,500 does sound a bit high (especially if it's a .net) unless you are already have invested money in that niche and are positive you can recoup that investment.

Save your money unless you are experienced in that niche. The reason is, as great as the domain is, you might lost interest in that niche fairly quickly once you got it. If you are new, just buy $10 domain and spend the rest on contents and driving traffic.

If it's ranking on page 2 then it sounds like there's a fair bit of work to do before you can bring it into the top results so unless you have a lot of trickle down traffic even on page 2 I'd give it a miss. Certainly for a price like that I would be expecting to plug and play, unless the potential income from it was so immense it couldn't be ignored. Hard to know without knowing the domain but I'd give it the thumbs down whether it was .net or .com myself.

I registered an EMD .net less than a week ago, I'm the first result on page 2, with 2 back links with no pr, and the term gets a few thousand searches a month. This is just one example, as I've done this with almost no effort many times. EMD will always matter if your end game is to rank for those keywords. You're looking at a bit more of SEO work otherwise. With that said I would register the EMD .org if its available, and save 1,490 for SEO work, which i'm sure it would not spend remotely close to all of on ranking it.

Not one person in this thread mentioned buying it is a good idea.

In fact, everyone said it's a bad idea.

Just pointing that out...

Good luck!
Lol, I was thinking this exact thing, as I read through this.

Extensions do not mean too much now days. I have plenty of .net domain names that I have ranked well in the engines with no issues.
