I don't know when this happened or if it's related, but I noticed yesterday when searching in the Australian Google that in some of the searches where there used to be Google Places results, there is now just organic.
One of them was for my own keywords. It's a non-issue for me cos I'm still #1, #2 and #4 for the organic listing so it won't make any difference for me.. but aside from my own results being changed with the "missing Google Places" listings for all browsers (for my keywords: "localtown marketing"), the reason I found it in the first place was because a client rang up and asked what happened to "his" #3 listing.. and he's a carpet cleaner.
For him though, Google had removed the Google Places listings altogether in IE, and in Chrome moved the results further down to the middle/bottom of the page.. so instead of being #3-#4, he'd been moved to around the #10 spot for all his different keywords.
So weird.
And I hadn't noticed it before yesterday - the client was usually in the top few spots before this, so yeah - not sure if it's related or not to any serp changes, or just Google having a little play with their toys.
We tweaked his Google Places listing a little bit (he's not a monthly client so I just told him what to change and gave him more suggestions on what to do) and tonight he's already at #1 spot of the Google Places listing (seems way, way too fast? especially as I doubt this particular guy has done what I suggested yet, and even if he has, he shouldn't of jumped to #1 in one day - unless there was an update today? or unless Google is having yet another play.)
But, he still won't be happy that Google has moved the Places results down the page because he is not in the top 4 spots in Google anymore, being #1 in Google Places is pointless if it's down the bottom of the page, especially in his industry where people just call the top few spots.
A few bizarre unexplained things going on in the world of Google.
