Building a company website - How much to charge?

Good day blackhatters!!

Tomorrow, I am going to come to meet a company's president to talk about doing their website. It seems like this boss doesn't know anything about "online" stuff, and I guess he was just going to make me do whatever I want as long as I do what they want.

Now, my problem is:

This is my first time doing a website for a company. I used to make websites, graphic designs, vb/c#/c++ applications for students and friends but I figured this is a big one. And I have absolutely no idea on how much to charge them.

I don't want to sound like a rip-off, but I don't want to miss some amount either. Anyone who has experienced working with these types of clients, please give me a hint or two on how to deal with them.

Any help would be appreciated..

Always ask what kind of budget they have to build the site then say for xx amount I can do this then xxx amount I can do this.

I always ask their budget to feel them out first.

Even if it is a large company we are talking about? The one who approached me (my father's friend), told me that budget is not important, I just need to tell her boss the price after we discussed about the website's content. I'm pretty sure they have a large budget range but I don't want to look like a rip-off..

You need to figure out what are their needs. Do they need sales forms, call of actions, or just a corporate general inquiry contact us form? Do they need the ability of updating the content anytime anywhere? While this is not a luxury now days, newbies tend to offer this hurting them more than benefiting them. Why? Many go here, publish a site in WP without looking at the consequences. Still a static site is sometimes the best route to go.

Are you planning to do the graphics your self? Are you planning to out source any part or all the parts of the job? Are you planning to build it on WP with a $40 theme and call it a day? Forget about SEO, and all that stuff. Put your toughs together on their needs, and how you can cover them. Your first meeting is not to walk out the door with a check in hand, that would be your mistake. Actually go and listen what they need to be publish, what they will want to publish. Grab all that information then you can figure it out how much to charge them. When they ask how much, tell it all depends, but I'm here to collect information of your needs and what you want to be publish to better decided what technologies to use in your favor. Give me 2 days to do my research and present you with a proposal.

Read it over again. Is the harsh truth. Don't make fool out of yourself, if you can't do something you will need to figure out how much it will cost you to outsource it. Yes, saving a buck here and there can leave it in your pocket, but looking bad won't bring you more business. A happy client, talks about your services to others.

You don't need to create 2, 3 proposals. Offer them what they need, nothing more. The more you add, the more it will cost, the more cumber-stone it becomes. Simplicity and quality are in your favor.

Realistically, you should decide how much you want to make per hour, and then estimate how many hours you will need to spend building them a website. Take the time to meet and learn about their business and requirements, and then get back to them with a quote - maybe include a low-end with $$addons and then a high-end all-inclusive quote.

List the features their company website needs (don't tell yet), and how you can help them to be successful. Go for 1k flat basic, then if tell them some features (that you listed), add $200 per feature or depending on the range of it. That's a good start for you. Don't forget to upsell, upsell and upsell your services.

This is a door you are opening, open it wide and make the client happy. Once the site is completely done and they are happy. Say, sir now that you have your site, we should talk about maintenance and marketing. Now you will bring the big bucks.

That is the income you are after. You can either feed yourself once, or keep eating every month. Your choice now. Good Luck.
