Strange Rankings?

Hello,

I've been optimizing a local contractor site for about a month and went from page 38 to page 12 in less than 3 weeks, then disappeared from the rankings for a week, then last night I saw my site at #2 for my main keyword, but when I refreshed the screen it was gone again!
What should I do? Is my site still indexed? Would building links to it's inner pages help it come back to the first page and stay there? how can i recover?

There are dozens of threads which might help you here. You have just to browse.
if you type "yoursite.com" or site:yoursite.com and still appears in index, it's not deindexed. Google does such things with new websites.

Then it will probably come back up to being at #2 for it's main keyword again?

clear your browser's cookies. then check it. then it will show the exact and true position of your website.

you're just gonna have to wait and watch, slow linkbuilding slightly, only get links from decent pages and use only your url as anchor text (or maybe a very strong brand term). See how it is in the next seven days.

Are you using anchor text in your links for the phrase or term your competition out ranks you on? If not then your inbound links aren't helping you as much as they could be.

Really? Then what's the point of SEO? This doesn't sound right to me...

Get a Serpfox.com free account which allows you to track 10 keywords for free. It will check the rankings for you 4 times a day. This way you have a standard to check vs. Also you get a better idea of your rankings movements in a objective way.

Then after a few days you should be able to see if the rankings are really going up and down like you said or if it was something just to do with your computer/browser/cookies.
