The really annoying fact about negative SEO is that Google sets their algorithm to let it happen! WTF, isn't that obvious to them that filthy IMers are gonna use and abuse this part of algorithm?
In fact I think Google's algo is in the worst ever shape these days!

So please comment on a situation like this:
A "Non Profit Organization" (aka big money for the members of the board and full payments to 10's of useless people "working for a good propose") decide to enter your niche starting an eshop and selling what you sell in order to get food for your family. You spend $$$ and time to maintain your on-line business, they spend OPM and government free money. You spend a whole day begging for a PR2 backlink they ask CNN to give them a PR8 backlink and they get it overnight.
Backlink from Wikipedia? not a question for you - No problem for them. GOV backlinks? Impossible for you - 10's for them without any problem.
Finally after 10 days you lost your No1 position on G00gl3 first page after 3 years (penguin, panda and all the animals updates including) of hard work for some snobs who decide to earn more money for them pretending that they earn money for "a good propose"
DID THEY DESERVE ALL POSSIBLE NEGATIVE SEO OR NOT?????????
Although finally this is not gone hurt them, i think they deserve it!

I get what you're saying 100% that is shear abuse of power by a so called authority figure, you just need to look at a goverments greed to realise power can make people become very very immoral. However, presumeing a non profit org does do this I don't think there would be a whole lot you could do.. I mean they haven't broken the law of IM and spammed your site to death with neg seo, they have just gone and got much higher pr links than you could ever imagine getting for free! If that did happen me personally would sulk, send a email to the CEO or as high as I could get to in there chain of command and see if I could come to some form of arrangement with them. I mean if they were to outrank you then you would only be knocked down to 2nd place which means you would still get traffic. I'd offer to aff for them aswell as continue selling what ever product I was selling. But to shearly neg seo them just for abuseing there power would still be morally wrong, yeah I'd be screwing but still I don't consider it a reason to blast them with spam.

That's brilliant! But how much time can you afford to spend on each time without any guarantees of earnings upfront? Where's that threshold when you giving up on it?

Achieving top ranks is the goal of every webmaster and business. Setting the ethics debate aside, the vast majority of business owners would perform negative SEO on their competitors if it pushed their own sites higher and generated more cash. It's happening now and will continue to grow if Google continues its policies of penalizing sites for offsite factors. By the time negative SEO really takes hold, Google may have already become a near 100% pay to play search engine for first page SERPS. The need to rank organic listings might not matter anyway since little traffic originates from page 2+ of the SERPS.
Well I used to spend 18 hours a day with no money or no guarantee of money, for the best part of a year or maybe more. Now I spend less than an hour a month if I am not making a few sites. Depends how much you want to make it, if you want to make it enough, you should be willing to work for fk all for a good few months.

You keep plugging or you quit. You get small successes, then they get bigger. Or you quit. You diversify your online portfolio. Or you quit.
Very rare is an IMer who succeeds on his first endeavor, especially if they are trying t do it on the cheap.

It is really refreshing how many people just on this thread have refused the route of negative seo.
Lets keep this up and spread the knowledge of how we help people rank...I mean breaking Googles or some multi million
dollar websites fake guidelines to how to run a website and tearing apart a fellow IMer is completely different.
If you cannot see the difference then you have a blurry mind.

Well i totally agree with your point negative seo is no way a part of any sensible techniques you wish to earn dollars you must work hard.. Negative seo is not going to get any better plus it is not even permanent.

Keep on refusing to ever do negative SEO. It is extremely profitable for those of us who don't see one blackhat method of deranking someone as more or less ethical than another.
You either go after someone by ranking your site over theirs using blackhat methods, or you use blackhat methods to derank them. Either way you are deranking them. There is no good and no evil. There is only money.

I tried to derank one of my sites but failed.
it was on place 4 and I shot 100k blog comment links (like ahrefs.com) in two days to my site and went to #1 now.
it had 4k links before and was about half a year aged.
I used just one anchor text and have more than 90% of my links with that anchor text.
test was started half a month ago. still #1

my assumption: 99% would at least think about using neg seo for payback.....
Looking at the title I was hoping the post would say what it did and wasn't a guide to negative seo. Glad to see there are still decent people out there. Props to you Mike
edit: Should have mentioned; I assume negative seo isn't that hard to figure out even for total newbies (like myself). Just analyze how badly you can do with blackhat for yourself and ...
I can't see it being used by anyone who has half a brain though, as mentioned above a lot of people may consider it for revenge and before you know it everyone is having a go at it. And you're all back to square one. What's the point of that...
