Yes you can download most stuff you see, you can rip content, you can rip embedded stuff, you can rip pictures, flash and whatever, all without ANY knowledge whatsoever. Don't get fooled by someone showing off and making things more difficult looking than it has to be.
Now, there are certain things you can not rip. This is nothing you see, you only see the results. You have to understand that there is server side code and client side code. 90% of what you see, probably more, is client side code.
However, sometimes there is software written to get special results. For instance, I could write a PHP script or phyton script or whatever server side coding software to write "software". For instance, if I make a piece of code that will automatically calculate your current age by asking your birth date I could do this in JavaScript and you could rip that but I could also write the SAME script in PHP or Java or whatever and THAT you can NOT download because you never get to see the code, just the end result. This is just an example, something this simple will normally be written in client side code and the result sent to the server.
Also, again: Don't get fooled by one way to do something. With computers there are always multiple ways to do the same thing. He was just messing with you to make himself look smart. Same thing with computerguru's that use command line software when there is no need either, just to make sure their clients think it is oh so hard to clean up your HDD for instance.
