My new development.

I love how people are being supportive and giving a lot of detailed notes within this thread, thanks.

I'll just do it. I'll release it when it's time OK.

Just to make it clear think we're going to go with an Advertisement PPC network.

Thanks.

Very true, but now we HAVE google.

In 1998 we had Yahoo and AltaVista (still remember what it was?).

And they done it pretty well - what would you suggest as features of a search engine that could compete with google?

Do not compete with Google. Create something that they will buy to expand their own empire, get rid of unnecessary competition or avoid their competitors using this technology.

Haha great detailed description of what can happen...
Almost like reading a comic.

Sure thing. You can also get hit by a bus on a way to office any time.

Yea that's a fair point. You should be a motivational speaker :-)

Lots of problems with Algo at the moment due to not having that many sites to rank... Still giving it ago though. not going to let it ruin things.

I wish you luck.....the first thing that comes to my mind when people keep asking you how you are going to compete with Google is this....

"success comes not in doing uncommon things well......but in doing common things uncommonly well"

By that I mean people always look for the next BIG idea, something new and unique.....when the majority of money in this world is made by people who simply do the common things better than everyone else....just food for thought

Thank you everyone for giving me support, I'm doing the best I can. Mostly results are not great but as soon as the indexing is happening, they'll be a lot more relevents.

Just keep going mate, it's looking good:)

While you may or may not succeed(I wish you the best of luck), the knowledge you'll pick up in the process will be tremendous and could potentially allow you to do something amazing. I'am talking from personal experience, I have worked on many projects that have totally flopped, but the knowledge/ideas I picked up in the process were pretty much priceless. Good luck with your quest!

Exactly, the only failure is not trying.

Thats one of the reasons why I am doing, I've got over 1.3million pages indexed right now. Which is quite good result from the other day. The relevents, well I know that was going to be such a problem at the start, however back to the board to improve, the SEO features of the search engine is not really live as we're indexing currently.

give everyone an update.. got 5.5 million indexed pages+ 15k+ indexed domains.. 8.8+ keywords to use

You just indexed 4 million pages in last 20 minutes?
Anyway, how much space are you using so far with those pages you have indexed?
Do you store the full content of each page? Or just the relevant keywords?

Go into some niche search area. Specific index for specific niche requirement. Like, say, daily deals search engine. Not even generic daily deals but something like daily restaurant deals in San Francisco, California search engine. When you prove concept, expand, get venture capital, get bought by Google or Microsoft, retire on Bahamas. I am serious. Don't listen to naysayers, go for it.

This would be exactly my advice. Don't try to index the whole web in the beginning as you don't have the resources for that. Rather go for something niche - either based on location or topic (finance, health, sports - but maybe even more niche, like "search engine for ice hockey" or whatever). That is how you can get a corner from a market and after it you can expand to other areas as well. Having a clear niche would also make it easier to monetize, as you could even monetize by showing "ads" with your own affiliate links or sell targeted ads to advertisers.

I give our wrong stats. The amount of space for the DB is over 25.5GB..

I'm storing keywords and a slight description of the content on page.

Now that you have put so much hard efforts, do make your Algo strong. Make your indexing good.
Its good to hear that you have indexed the said amount . Now try indexing on specific niche, this will gain you some extra advantage to stand out. remember, a search engine is a place where people want fast output so you can relate that wisely.
Dont know to what extend you can afford to work, but what you are doing is really unique and if you do continue and don't let yourself fail out of frustration You got some real cozy place to put yourself and stand out. May be few months latter I will pm you.

Cheers!

You may not want to give out such details, but I'm going to ask anyway as I am curious. How have you structured your keyword ranking algorithm? Just based on on-site keywords, anchor texts or something new? Do you rank pages and domains within your DB like Google do?

Sorry, I won't release these details to anyone, it's going to be a just guess like Google, thanks.
