Hi there,

I'm just wanting some advice really, I've been building an search engine for 5 years on and off and now I've finally got something put together and is working absolutely fine, bots are working out and spidering as many websites as possible. Results are coming back "OK" but I would like some help on how to make a revenue stream for the search engine? I've got a few ideas but I think it's copying and not interested in copying.

It's still in dev and I am beta testing it. Can anyone shread some light on a revenue stream for this?

How many documents are you able to index (say in an hour)? I think indexing atleast small part of the internet is much bigger problem than creating some algorithm to sort the search results.

Thank you. At the moment I am topping 2,500ish every 30 minutes, however I'm still working on a DC to supply me with a cheaper and faster server so I can start doing real bots.

I have 5 bots working at the moment, searching the web for links to index - I've got 125k+ indexed pages from around the web in 36hours.

I know 2,500 is SLOW and I know google does like 1 million a second or whatever, but the prince able is that I've created my own index, database whatever and I've started from ground up....

Maybe a better move would be to adapt your software to be like ahrefs - so try and replicate google as much as you can, and use the software and a testing platform for Seo techniques/ google update tracking.

Traffic is building every day, by mistake I brought a domain that was indexed in 2010 and had a load of backlinks so at the moment I am getting traffic from there.

Well that's why I suggested going down the Seo testing avenue - creating a tool like ahrefs, but try to produce same results as google, then you could produce valuable data on algo changes, what works and what doesn't etc, it would be a more niche approach and might be better in terms of generating revenues.

If you go down the search route, you'll struggle to make it, because there's no demand.

If you have a really smart algo (I assume that it's true, in other case there is absolutely no point in doing a search engine) make some patents and then sell it to google / microsoft or another search engine vendor.
I think it's the only way to make a profit in this market now.
Another way is finding someone with really serious $$$ to invest.

Just a brief advice from someone who has been doing business all his life: In general if you don't worry about your competitors you'll get squashed. More specifically if you don't worry about your competitors and one of them is Google and the other is Yahoo you'll be squashed like an overripe squash that was very depressed and eventually committed suicide by jumping off the Burj Khalifa and by a stroke of extraordinary misfortune landed on a land mine just in front of an 18 wheeler.

Listen to naysayers. Pessimists may be less entertaining company, but on the bright side they are mostly right.

On a serious note, and perhaps a bit of helpful advice. I come from an academic background - legal to be quite specific - and although I now run my own company I still keep in touch with many people toiling away in academia. The lack of proper search tools available for academic research has always puzzled me. You either have extremely specific search engines or you are forced to use google. Specifically cross border and cross discipline tools are very limited.

For some time I was playing around with the idea of building a search engine for scientific articles, blogs and sites. Most of the articles are available for free, but the only search engines (at least at the time) are paid services and in general rubbish. If you have built a good spider and indexing script, it may be a niche worth exploring.

Very true, but now we HAVE google.
And they done it pretty well - what would you suggest as features of a search engine that could compete with google?

By the way I'm not bring negative- I think it's an excellent project, just trying to think of a sustainable area OP could operate in.

I agree with others, maybe a niche search engine would be good idea?
