How exactly do you manully build backlinks?

Not to be spoonfed but I am really confused on this whole Manual back linking thing. I searched around and have even googled and it seems that manual back linking is just placing your site link on 3rd party sites correct?

So how exactly do you place your link on those 3rd party sites? So far I can only think of forums and blog comments. Writing up good content and having people link to you is what we strive for but I really don't understand this side of off page Seo.

I think it means reading the blog, and manually writing a comment that makes sense that will stick as opposed to a general reply like "nice post, I agree, please post more of this topic". Same thing with the forums, making legit forum posts and cleverly dropping links.

You do it the same way as automation software does but you do everything by hand in a browser so it takes 100x more time and the result is the same or worse (as humans make mistakes when they are tired and computers don't get tired).

These will help you find forums in your niche.
"powered by SMF" your keyword
"powered by IPB" your keyword
"powered by MyBB" your keyword
"powered by PunBB" your keyword
"Powered by Phbb" your keyword
"powered by vBulletin" your keyword

These will help you find blogs to comment on (including specific searches for .edu and .gov sites that often have a high PageRank and some believe, a higher authority than commercial sites).

And then start link-building away. Just keep one thing in mind. In 1 day, you can maybe post 50 links manually (quality links), and maybe 40 will stick.

In, the same time period, tools can build maybe 10 000 and at least 500 will stick. True, you post will sound like bullcrap. But you are building links for SEO. If you are building links to get traffic FROM those forums/blogs/etc.. than that is a different story, and in that case better links with context and quality.
