Am I on the right track

I've been learning beginner SEO and I want to make sure I have this straight. This doesn't need to be a big topic, just reassurence.

I have a website and I have decided a main key word, and a few other key words that I will be trying to rank for.
I have used Wordpress plugins to edit meta tags and tag each and every post, but not too many redundant tags
I should focus on getting my on-page SEO perfect, and after that I should mainly focus on getting backlinks from high PR websites, old websites, or edu or gov websites. I should also keep the website updated regularly.
All of this should get me ranked on google

Is this all correct? Am I forgetting anything?

Right on. Just start small, easy phrases... As you learn more (BHW is a wealth of knowledge) try to rank for more voluminous phrases, more monthly exact searches. Good luck! You can also pm me with a specific question you have as there is obviously a lot more to learn.

Yep, that is the usual plan, make sure to diversify your link platforms (not just 10 000 social bookmarks) and anchor text. Take it nice and slow and manual with new websites, but that should work in theory.

Which Wordpress SEO plugin do you use? You using Yoast by chance?

At any rate, yeah that looks good for starters. It's the same thing I've been doing and it's been working. Don't we love empirical evidence? Heheh

Oh and one other thing I might add that might help you. Download the free version of Buzzbundle. I actually just purchased the full version, but what's cool about it is that you can enter in keywords that relate to your website that you want to promote and it will go and find relevant blogs for you to comment on and it will show the Pagerank for that webpage automatically. It helps a lot when looking for high pagerank blogs to comment on...amongst other things. I dig it.

I cant remember the names of the plugins without checking, but I'm using an SEO optimizer plugin, and something that makes modifying meta tags really easy. Buzzbundle sounds pretty sweet, maybe I'll look into it!

I have a question, guys. How many keywords should a single website rank for? I know every site needs one main keyword, but as far as other ones, how much is too much? Right now I have a main keyword and 3 others

Well this is the way I'm doing it. My home page is actually ranking for my main keyword phrase. All of my other pages are ranking for individual keywords per page. Each page has it's own set of target keywords. You can rank a site for 1,000's of keywords if you'd like with each page ranking on it's own.

That's how I do it and it seems to do just fine.
